Wine, cheese, the Eiffel Tower and fashion. Moulin Rouge. Disneyland. Culture. France is famous for SO many things. When it comes to that je ne sais quois vibe, France is legendary. It’s one of the most popular destinations in the world, with tourists flocking to hotspots such as Paris, Cannes and Nice.

It’s impossible to name all of the wonderful things that France does so well (a special shoutout to the flaky, buttery croissants!), but here’s seven of its most famous.

Here is a List of The 7 Things France Is Famous For

Fine Wines

1. Fine Wines

French wine is world-class, and there’s over 200 indigenous wine varieties to be found. From well known grapes such as Merlot, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Syrah to lesser known gems such as Prunelard and Savagnin, French wines are some of the best in the world. French winemaking first started in the 6th century BC, and the quality is now strictly regulated by the Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée, or AOC system.

The Eiffel Tower

2. The Eiffel Tower

The Eiffel Tower is the centrepiece of Paris. Every year 7 million people flock to the iron arches to look up at one of the world’s most iconic structures.

The Eiffel Tower was built as an entrance to the 1889 World Fair. To commemorate the 100th anniversary since the French Revolution, Paris was the host. How fitting that a structure to mark one of France’s most significant moments in history is now a monument recognised around the world!

The Louvre

3. The Louvre

It’s no surprise that The Louvre is the largest and most visited museum in the world, given that it’s home to the world’s most famous face, Mona Lisa. The Louvre was originally built as a fortress in 1190 and was later reconstructed into a royal palace in the 16th century.

To see all of its collection would take 100 days! The Louvre houses over 380,000 pieces of art and displays ‘only’ 35,000.

Cheese & Baguettes

4. Cheese & Baguettes

Is there a more perfect pairing than some soft French cheese and a crusty baguette? We certainly don’t think so. There are more than 400 French cheese varieties. Delicious varieties include soft cheeses (Camembert, Coulommiers, Munster), blue-veined cheeses (Roquefort, Bleu d’Auvergne) and harder cheeses (Gruyere, Comté, Parmesan).

You can get baguettes from any local boulangerie – arrive early before they sell out!

Palace Of Versailles

5. Palace Of Versailles

Located on the peripheral of Paris is the royal chateau, the Palace of Versailles. This Palace is truly the king of palaces as this sprawling compound features the Hall of Mirrors, Grand Canal, and the Royal Opera House.

It’s easy to spend an entire day at Palace of Versailles and you should absolutely do so. You can also take a leisure bicycle ride through the Palace park if you don’t feel like walking.

The French Riviera

6. The French Riviera

The French Riviera (or Côte d’Azur) is the beautiful Mediterranean coast of southeastern France. It includes the glamorous beach towns such as Saint-Tropez and Cannes; Antibes, Vallauris, Mougins, the charming towns made famous by Picasso and urban Nice. You’ll spot super yachts, celebs and mansions everywhere along the coast.

Mont Blanc

7. Mont Blanc

Mont Blanc is the highest mountain in the Alps, spanning across the border of France and Italy. If you want to hit the slopes, visit the ski town of Chamonix. In the streets of this high-mountain town, you’ll encounter people from all kinds of different cultures who are visiting just to get a chance to witness the stunning Mont Blanc in person. Just yet another amazing thing that France is famous for!
