Guide to Dresden

Geography

Dresden, the capital of Saxony, is Eastern Germany's third-largest city after Leipzig and Berlin.. It's located in the Elbe River Basin, about 19 miles from the Czech border and around 100 miles from Berlin.

Climate in Dresden

Due to its inland location, Dresden has an oceanic climate with considerable continental influences. Summers are hot and sometimes overcast, and winters are bitterly cold and windy in this region. Winters are milder than the national average in this area. Temperatures seldom go above or below 31°C throughout the year.

Culture

The Electors and Kings of Saxony made Dresden their capital and royal home for a long time, which infused the city with culture and art. The city's baroque and rococo city centre earned it the nickname "Jewel Box." Despite being bombed during World War II, Dresden regained its former grandeur as a cultural, educational, and political hub of Germany after German reunification in 1990.

Things To Do in Dresden

Enjoy a splendid cathedral

Dresden Frauenkirche is arguably one of Europe's most recognised churches. During the Allied Bombings in 1945, the magnificent Baroque edifice was completely demolished, but the ruins were saved for rebuilding, during which almost 4000 original stones were repurposed. The gold highlights on the restored high altar reveal tiers upon tiers of galleries on its walls. The gold cross on the coat of arms was a gift from the United Kingdom, whose bombs were largely responsible for the devastation. To the right of the rebuilt altar, you can make out the remains of the previous cross that was demolished. Guests can ride an elevator to the top of the dome for spectacular city views, attend religious services, or enjoy one of the many concerts held here each year.

Admire Baroque masterpieces

Germany's Zwinger Palace, built in the 18th century near the Elbe, is one of the country's best specimens of Baroque architecture. Pavilions and gardens with balustrades and statues border the galleries that overlook the complex. Along its southern edge is the impressive 32-bay Long Gallery, which is flanked on each side by the Wall Pavilion and the Nymphenbad (Bath of the Nymphs), both of which include elaborate fountains and mythical sculptures. In the Royal Cabinet of Mathematical and Physical Instruments, you'll find the Dresden Porcelain Collection as well as scientific instruments. The Gemaldegalerie Alte Meister or the Old Masters Picture Gallery is another must-see, exhibiting Italian, Dutch, Spanish and Flemish Renaissance art.

Take in an opera show

The Dresden opera house, the Semperoper, is designed in the Italian High Renaissance style and can be found on the west side of Theaterplatz in the city. Get a sense of history by looking at the front-facing sculptures of Goethe, Euripides, Schiller, Shakespeare, and Molière. The only way to see the lavish interiors is to attend a performance of a concert, ballet, or opera. Alternatively, you may join a staff-led tour in English or German at scheduled intervals of 15 and 30 minutes throughout the day. The Semperoper is a world-renowned performing arts centre where Wagner and Richard Strauss premiered their operas in the late 1800s.

Eating Out in Dresden

The dishes at Genuss-Atelier are considerably more innovative than anything else in town. Edible flowers and flavorful foam are used by the chefs to create a unique gastronomic experience. Reservations are required, and all the wine and beer are from within 100 miles of the restaurant. The Sophienkeller in the Taschenberg Palace has beautiful vaulted ceilings that will make you feel right at home. The atmosphere is reminiscent of the 1730s thanks to the period-dressed waitresses. Enjoy a boneless half-duck with red cabbage or a suckling pig that has been cut in half and cooked on both sides. Bohemian Krusovice is a great way to end the meal. Little India in Dresden offers a taste of India in a vibrant, unpretentious setting. Enjoy the tantalising tandoori meals and delectable naan that come with them.
