Guide to Munich

A Brief History of the Bavarian Capital.

The name Munich (München) means ‘by the monks,’ reflecting the fact that the old town of Munich grew out of the area Benadictine monks ran a monastery, to this day a monk is featured on the Munich coat of arms.

In 1806 Munich became capital of the Kingdom of Bavaria. During the following decades many of the finest architectural gems were first built, under the reign of King Ludwig I (1825 – 1848). By 1871 Bavaria was part of the growing German Empire, though the region maintained much of its own culture and tradition. Today the region is known as the Free State of Bavaria, and although part of the German nation, it is a region proud of its unique heritage and traditions.

In the first half of the 20th Century, Munich’s history is heavily connected to war. The city was bombed heavily, particularly during the second world war, resulting in the need for much repair and rebuilding in the post-war years.

A number of well-known people have connections with Munich and the surrounding areas, including composer Richard Strauss, and Pope Benedict XVI, who as Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger was Archbishop of Munich.
