June is the tipping point of summer in Europe. It’s the fleeting window of warm weather, long days, and balmy evenings, just before the school summer holidays arrive. Prices are generally lower, tourist crowds are thinner, and the heat is comfortable enough for both exploring and beach days. And for some destinations, it’s all about beach towns and city squares coming back to life, defrosting after the winter. Whether you want a slow island escape, a hiking trip, or a lively Mediterranean city break, June is one of the best months to travel in Europe. Here’s where to go in 2026.
Where to travel in Europe this summer
1. Lipari, Aeolian Islands, Italy
Average temperature in June 2026: 24°C
Closest airport: Catania Airport
There are only so many times we can see the same shot of Positano on Instagram. Beautiful places in Italy are not hard to come by, you just need to do a little digging. Enter: Lipari, the largest of the Aeolian Islands. This quieter, more affordable archipelago is just off Sicily, and the perfect alternative to more popular Italian destinations. Simply fly into Catania and catch the ferry to Lipari, which takes around 1 hour 15 minutes.
This small volcanic island is distinctively Sicilian. Pastel-coloured houses line the marina, which is filled with sparkling white speedboats and small catamarans bobbing in the teal waters. Life moves slowly here, there’s no itinerary to tick off. But one thing we do recommend is to hire a vespa to explore the island on two wheels, hopping between Valle Muria Beach, Belvedere di Quattrocchi, the Pomice Pier, and other equally gorgeous spots.
In June, Lipari still feels wonderfully under-the-radar, the kind of Italian summer escape you’ve been craving. Take boat trips to the nearby islands before the high season crowds arrive, like Salina and Stromboli, and swim in the impossibly clear waters. Evenings are warm enough for lingering seafood dinners by Marina Corta, but not so warm that your ice cubes will melt into your Aperol Spritz within 30 seconds.
2. Granada, Spain
Average temperature in June 2026: 25°C
Closest airport: Malaga Airport
Ah, Granada. An hour and a half from Malaga Airport, but so worth the journey. If the Alhambra isn’t enough to make you think so, then maybe the free tapas with every drink will. And no, there’s no catch. The Andalusian tradition of small tapas plates with drinks is dying out in other cities, but it’s going strong in Granada.
Granada is known for its Moorish architecture but we think it should be up there with San Sebastian as one of Spain’s great food cities. It’s not just that the tapas is free, it’s the whole experience. Hopping between dark-oak-clad bars, where there are often 4 stools between 50 people. Los Diamantes is a personal favourite. The place specialises in seafood – getting free plates of prawns almost feels illegal – but they also surprisingly serve the most flavoursome garlic mushrooms. The beers are small, crisp, and refreshingly cold on balmy June Granada nights, so they go down easily, and so do the tapas plates that come with them.
Granada is a great destination all year-round because it’s more about culture, history, and atmosphere, rather than sun-soaking. But June is still a standout month. Long, sunny days that are perfect for exploring before the unrelenting heat of July and August, with warm but breezy evenings that are ideal for tapas terraces followed by a mesmerising flamenco show. There’s a lively street atmosphere in June, too, particularly around the Corpus Christi Fair, held between 30th May and 6th June this year.
3. Annecy, France
Average temperature in June 2026: 23°C
Closest airport: Geneva Airport
Annecy in June is alpine lake beauty at its peak. The mountains reflect in the turquoise waters of Lake Annecy, which glitter in the late-afternoon sun. The sun sets around 9.25pm, so there are over 15 hours of daylight – plenty of time to make the most of Annecy’s abundant activities. One of the best things to do here is to cycle around the lake. The two-way cycling path is well-paved and signposted, with beautiful views the whole route. A complete lap is 42km and takes around 4 hours, and you can rent both classic bikes and e-bikes in Annecy. Be sure to stop for lunch at Les Jardins du Taillefer, an organic farm with excellent food, around 21.5km into the cycle. This is a popular route with families, so June (before the school summer holidays) is the perfect time to do it.
Make the most of the temperatures before the height of summer and hike Mont Veyrier for panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, Lake Annecy, and the city. Or, if your holiday style leans more towards relaxation, June is ideal for swimming and relaxing by the lake, or just meandering through the Beauty-and-the-Beast-esque medieval old town. Canals are flanked by pastel-coloured houses, earning Annecy the nickname, ‘Venice of the Alps’.
The best way to get to Annecy is to actually fly to Geneva in Switzerland. From Geneva Airport, you can take a 1-hour 40-minute train, a 50-minute bus, or hire a car and drive, which takes around 30 minutes.
4. Paleokastritsa, Corfu, Greece
Average temperature in June 2026: 26°C
Closest airport: Corfu Airport
With unspoilt beaches, crystal clear coves, and dramatic limestone cliffs, it’s no wonder Paleokastritsa is said to be the mythical spot where Odysseus was shipwrecked. One look at the cerulean waters, and it’s easy to get swept up in the enchanting world of Greek mythology.
In June, the waters aren’t just beautiful to look at. With sea temperatures of around 23°C, the Ionian Sea becomes a haven for swimming and snorkelling. Simply rent or buy a snorkel and spend the day hopping between beaches. Agios Petros Beach sits between the main bays, with rocky edges that teem with bream, starfish, and octopus. And you can spot crabs and other sealife at Ampelaki Beach and Spiros Beach. Or, boat trips are the best way to get to harder-to-reach snorkelling spots, as well as the famous Nausicaa’s Cave and the Blue Eye Cave. If you’re up for an adventure, you can rent a boat yourself without a boating licence – only for boats up to 30 horsepower – and find quieter snorkelling coves yourself. In June, you can get pretty good deals on boat trips, before the rush of July and August drives prices up.
Paleokastritsa’s appeal is mostly wrapped up in its coastal paradise status, but, like most of Greece, there’s history here, too. The 13th-century Monastery of the Virgin Mary is worth tearing yourself away from the beach for, and in June, the landscape is typically still lush and green after spring. Paleokastritsa is around a 35-minute drive from Corfu International Airport, making it an easy base for exploring the island by hire car.
5. Lake District, England
Average temperature in June 2026: 16°C
Closest airport: Manchester Airport
Not every hiking holiday has to involve scaling Alpine peaks. Not all of us want the intensity of high-altitude hiking in Madeira, or the wildness of roaming around the Scottish Highlands. The Lake District finds a sweet spot, where the long days are spent ambling through gorgeous meadows scattered with June wildflowers, into hazy afternoons in lakeside pub gardens, and ending beside the fire in chic cottage stays.
More adventure is there if you want it, though. June is the start of camping season in the Lakes – although the nights are still chilly. There are campsites designed to feel ‘wild’, with mountain views and lakeshore access, while still having facilities on-site. Or, you can wild camp under certain parameters, like pitching your tent above the highest fell wall (around 400m), arriving at dusk and moving on at dawn, only staying for one night, and of course, leaving no trace.
Whether you camp, cosy up in a cottage, or splash out on a luxury spa hotel, you’ll be charmed by the early summer magic of the Lakes. Quiet cruises on Ullswater, pretty walks around Crummock Water, and wild swimming in Rydal are that much better when there are fewer people around. The best way to explore is by car, and Manchester Airport is the easiest gateway to the region, with plenty of car hire options available.
6. Palma, Mallorca, Spain
Average temperature in June 2026: 26°C
Closest airport: Palma de Mallorca Airport
Barcelona tends to steal the spotlight when it comes to city-and-beach breaks in Spain, but Palma was made for June. The anticipation of early summer hangs in the air: terraces are busy into the golden evenings, beach clubs burst back into life, and the marina fills with boats basking in the Balearic sunshine. While many destinations shine in June because they catch a period before the peak season madness, Palma is different. In June, the city wakes up, and it’s better for it.
Nit de Foc (Night of Fire) marks this, held on 23rd June as a fiery celebration of the summer solstice. People gather on Playa de Palma and set up bonfires, have picnics, and party until the early hours.
Mallorca Live Festival is another highlight of Palma’s annual calendar, held between 12th - 14th June 2026. The festival hosts a mix of huge international and local artists. This year, bands like the Prodigy, Cypress Hill, and the Libertines take to the stage, alongside Spanish singers Dani Fernández and Aitana.
Palma also has an international airport, making it one of the easiest beach getaways in Europe. It’s just a 10-minute drive from the airport to the city centre. You can hop in a taxi, or hire a car for the freedom to explore more of the island, like the dramatically scenic Serra de Tramuntana on the west coast.
7. Lagos, Portugal
Average temperature in June 2026: 24°C
Closest airport: Faro Airport
Lagos kind of has it all. Gorgeous beaches, a cute old town, excellent seafood, nightlife, reliable surfing, and hikes. And in June, Lagos is just about to slip into peak summer season, hitting that sweet spot where the weather is sunny but not brutally hot yet, there are fewer crowds, but there’s still a lively energy, and the sea starts to warm up. Although this is the Atlantic Sea we’re talking about, it’s not going to be Mediterranean Sea levels of warm.
For surfers, June brings gentle but consistent waves. Backpackers will enjoy the lower pre-peak-season prices and cheap cocktails on Bar Street. For couples, relax on quiet cliff-flanked golden beaches, like Dona Ana, before tucking into fresh seafood and local wine in the Old Town restaurants. For those with itchy feet, Lagos is a great base for exploring other areas of the Algarve – hire a car when you arrive at Faro Airport and head to nearby Salema, a quiet fishing town with a beautiful beach, just a 25-minute drive away.
The milder weather is also much more comfortable for hiking along the cliffs, like the Fishermen’s Trail from Lagos to Praia da Luz. And for the iconic Algarve kayaking trips, June’s calm ocean conditions mean you can access more unique rock formations and caves – without the intense crowds of July and August. Evenings can be breezy, though, but a light jacket will do the trick.
