The Bucegi Mountains are home to one of the most impressive natural monuments in Romania, the Sphinx, or Great Bucegi Sphinx. The shape of this rock formation resembles a human face, and experts believe that this shape is a result of wind erosion over a long period of time.

You’ll find the Sphinx in the Bucegi Natural Park – one of the 16 national parks in Romania. The park is located in the Bucegi Mountains in central Romania, south of the city of Brașov. The Bucegi Mountains are part of the Southern Carpathians group of the Carpathian Mountains. Access to the Bucegi plateau is via cable car from Busteni or by car to Cabana Piatra Arsa and from there on foot – it’s a 30-minute hike.

The Sphinx is located at an altitude of 2,216 metres (7,270 ft) within the Babele complex of rock formations. It is 8 metres in height and 12 metres in width. Experts say that the first photo of the Great Bucegi Sphinx was taken around the year 1900, but it was a straight-on photo, not a lateral one, therefore the shape isn’t as distinctive. It only acquired its nickname, the Sphinx, in 1936, which refers to the Great Sphinx of Giza.

The Sphinx shape only appears when you view the rock from a certain angle. The megalith has its clearest outline on 21 November, at sunset.

Hundreds of tourists gather at the Sphinx in Bucegi on the 28th of November each year. On this day, at sunset, gathers believe that the sun’s rays form an energy pyramid around the face of the Sphinx and that these rays have a healing effect. People gather around the Sphinx to receive energy from the “Energy Pyramid”.

Babele is another famous natural monument located on the Bucegi Plateau. It is located at an altitude of 2,292 meters. Erosion created these two rocks that look like hunchbacked old ladies or rocky mushrooms.
