Heraklion is known for many things– namely its history, culture and beautiful beaches, perhaps making its surrounding towns and cities somewhat overlooked. We’ve decided to let Crete’s hidden gem beaches and lesser-known coastal regions shine in this article. While Heraklion features many beaches, you may want to venture out and explore the surrounding areas while on a trip there. If you are planning a road trip across Crete’s coastline, why not consider hiring a car whilst you’re at it?
You may not know it yet, but some of the best beaches are located outside of Heraklion, and are very likely to become your new favourite hangout spot once you’ve located them. From beaches that are perfect for families, to secluded coves and beaches ideal for partygoers or those seeking excellent nightlife, you’re guaranteed to find a wide range of golden sandy beaches that rival even Heraklion’s best offerings. Let’s take a look at the top 7 best beaches near Heraklion, and how long it would take to get to each beach by car:
Heraklion's best sandy hangout spots: Best beaches near Crete's capital
7. Gournes Beach
Distance from Heraklion: Approx. 9 miles (20 minute duration)
This quaint little beach adjacent to Gournes village may be small, but is by all means as fulfilling as its larger neighbours. Stroll along the sand, swim or paddle in the crystal clear waters, or enjoy the surrounding scenery. Away from the beach, the village is a lovely place to visit, but really you’ll likely want to stay right where you are. Gournes Beach may initially be unknown to many first-time visitors of Crete, but its gorgeous landscape and quiet but vibrant atmosphere makes it worthy of being included on this list and at the top of your Crete itinerary.
6. Potamos Beach
Distance from Heraklion: Approx. 26 miles (40 minute duration)
Potamos is known for being a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of the nearby cities of Malia and Heraklion. Although Malia’s main beach is usually rife with tourists and activities, Potamos is its quieter but just as exciting neighbour. What you can expect from Potamos is beautiful scenery, crystal clear turquoise waters that mirror (literally) a tropical island and a lively but not chaotic atmosphere. Potamos Beach is only a 40 minute drive from Heraklion, and is definitely worth visiting if you’re wanting to get away from the busy city life for a bit.
5. Karteros Beach
Distance from Heraklion: 5 miles (15 minute duration)
Probably the closest beach to Heraklion on this list, Karteros exudes the same familiar charm as Heraklion’s main beaches, but stands out of its own accord thanks to its vibrant history-steeped sandy shores and reputation among locals. With a large stretch of golden sand and lively promenade, Karteros Beach is perfect for all kinds of visitors, whether you’re looking for a family friendly beach or a place to sit, relax and enjoy a drink. Why not take a walking tour around Karteros Beach and its surrounding areas, and take in the sights and history?
4. Analipsi Beach
Distance from Heraklion: 14 miles (25 minute duration)
If you're a frequent visitor to Crete, you'll likely have heard of this beach located only a 25-minute drive from Heraklion. Most popular among families and watersport enthusiasts, Analipsi Beach is well known among both tourists and locals alike. Although small and often much quieter than most of Crete’s beaches, Analipsi Beach is a vibrant and popular hangout spot for a variety of visitors. You can relax and sunbathe on the umbrella-topped sunloungers here, simply stroll and enjoy the view, or enjoy a drink or bite to eat at the nearby cafe– the choice is yours.
3. Stalida Beach
Distance from Heraklion: 20 miles (30 minute duration)
A far cry from the busy streets of Stalida’s neighbour Malia, Stalida Beach is a quiet spot that’s perfect for tourists, but still has a lot to offer in terms of things to do and see. Stalida Beach provides a stunning backdrop to your sunbathing or paddling, and the bright blue water welcomes and entices even the most reluctant swimmers into its sparkling depths. Lined with bars and restaurants, and a short distance from both Malia and Heraklion, Stalida Beach offers the best of both worlds to every visitor, whether you're with family or enjoying an impromptu solo holiday.
2. Malia Beach
Distance from Heraklion: 22 miles (35 minute duration)
Malia is a partygoers paradise, with lively strips of clubs and bars and large crowds of eager tourists. Thanks to its popularity and bustling nightlife, Malia is certainly not for the faint of heart or those seeking a quieter trip. Malia’s main beach is lined with resorts, hotels and bars, and is usually full, but while this may put some people off, you certainly shouldn’t let it. The beach is the perfect place to partake in numerous activities, watersports or boating trips, to sunbathe or dine and drink with stunning views.
Arguably one of the best beaches in Crete, Malia is only a 20-minute drive from Heraklion– if you’re seeking a thrilling and exciting trip, town hopping may be a good idea, but for those who want to escape and relax, you’ll be able to find quiet hidden gem beaches a short distance from Heraklion and Malia.
1. Agia Pelagia Beach
Distance from Heraklion: 16 miles (30 minute duration)
We’ve put this at the top simply because of its appeal, and how it embodies the true culture of Crete just by what it has to offer. Agia Pelagia may not be high on your list of beaches to visit on your Crete or Heraklion trip, but it should be, and this is why. It’s a small but charming little beach that is as fulfilling as all the other popular beaches, but its unsuspecting nature makes it come out on top.
Lined with hotels and beach bars and restaurants, Agia Pelagia mirrors the likes of Malia beach in terms of appeal, but is much less crowded and busy, making it perfect for a more peaceful trip. It’s up to you how you spend your time at Agia Pelagia, but one thing’s for sure, once you arrive you’ll never want to leave.
