Faro, the capital of the Algarve region of Portugal, is known for its Praia de Faro beach that attracts thousands of tourists each year. But, some of the best beaches aren’t actually in Faro, but are under an hour’s drive from the city. The Algarve hosts the best beaches, from island beaches to secret coves and hidden gems. Especially in the summer months, the Algarve is a prime holiday spot in Portugal, not just for its beaches but also for its food scene and golf courses. 

If you’ve got some time to kill during your trip to Faro, and want to explore more of what the Algarve’s coastline has to offer, then why not check out its resident beaches? Most of these beaches are at maximum an hour’s drive from Faro, so it’s very easy to get there and back in good time– why not hire a car from Faro to get around whilst you’re at it? Lined with lively promenades, stunning and unique rock formations and an abundance of activities, what more could you ask for from a beach in the Algarve?

7. Tavira Island Beach

Driving Distance from Faro: Around 40 minutes 

Tavira Island is an island located just off the coast of the Algarve, and its beach is a popular holiday destination that has earned a reputation as being one of the Algarve’s best beaches. Tavira Beach’s 10-11km long sandy stretch is lined with a lively promenade complete with cafes and restaurants, plus crystal clear turquoise waters that are akin to the best tropical paradise you can imagine. If you want to relax or sunbathe, you can enjoy the comfy sunloungers that are perfectly shaded by a straw umbrella– it truly is the perfect tranquil beach that is a far cry from the busy beaches of the Algarve.

Located in the Albufeira district of the Algarve, which itself is known for its lively nightlife and collection of beaches, Praia dos Pescadores is one of the top beaches around. Formerly a fishing village, Praia dos Pescadores is now a gorgeous beach lined with sandstone cliffs and bright white houses– you’ll usually see this beach full of holidaymakers and coastline aficionados, but to tourists, the beach may be slightly more unknown. The beach is also lined with a dozen or so bars, restaurants and cafes, making your experience all the more fulfilling and exciting.

Carvoeiro beach is a stunning sight among beach fanatics who are on the search for one of the most visually gorgeous beaches they’ve ever seen. Lined with charming coastal walking and hiking trails and scenic steps down to the beach, plus dramatic cliff faces and a lively atmosphere, what more could you really want from a beach in the Algarve? Plus, it’s only around a 50-minute drive from Faro, meaning you can explore the inner city walls of Faro and relax on Carvoeiro’s crescent-shaped coastline all on the same day.

Want to feel like you’re on a tropical island without having to fly anywhere? Well, Quarteira beach simulates that very feeling, with its palm-tree lined beach that is rarely quiet– if you’re looking for a quiet coastal escape, maybe choose another beach, as Quarteira is well known among both locals and tourists. What this beach has to offer, apart from visual appeal and a convenient location, is a large stretch of sand and a family-friendly vibe that makes it attractive to all kinds of visitors. Its crowded promenade also offers a wide range of bars, restaurants and beachside activities that’ll make you stuck on what to experience first.

3. Praia da Falesia

Praia da Falesia offers more than 5km of attractive golden sand and sparkling water, earning it a reputation as one of the Algarve’s best loved beaches. Rugged red-tinged sandstone cliffs line the beach, with a charming walk down that is lit up after dark. One of the more secluded beaches, the lack of large tourist crowds may make this beach a good option for those who are seeking a more laid-back excursion and want to escape the busy streets of Faro– being only a 45 minute drive from Faro, Praia de Falesia is also an excellent contender in the best beaches near Faro category. 

2. Marinha Beach

Driving Distance from Faro: 50 minutes

Best characterised by its stunning rock formations and bright blue water, Marinha Beach is truly a natural beauty. With its stunning landscape views, it’s the perfect place to sit and enjoy the sunset or soak up the sun. Plus, with its large cliffs hiding it from its busy surroundings, it’s more of a hidden gem to tourists– you’ll be lucky to stumble across this beautiful beach, that’s for sure. The beach’s surrounding limestone cliffs make for the best scenic viewpoints too, so if you’re looking to enjoy the best views of the Algarve and the horizon, there really is no better place.

1. Benagil Beach

Driving Distance from Faro: 50 minutes

This is a small beach that is usually scattered with locals and tourists who know how to access it, but to the unsuspecting eyes, it really is an incredible find. You won’t want to miss out on a photographic opportunity in one of the beach’s signature domed caves, which make for a tranquil escape from the otherwise bustling sandy stretches. It really is a once in a lifetime experience to find this beach, and once you do find it you definitely won’t want to leave.
