As the weather begins to change all over the world, many travellers are starting to search for the best places to visit in Europe in January. It’s often one of the coldest months for many countries, so a quick getaway and some sun is usually much needed.
Looking for the best European city to travel to in January? We’ve got you covered.
Best Places To Visit In Europe In January
1. Tenerife, Spain
Tenerife is one of those classic holiday islands that attracts people all year round because of its wonderful weather, great food and beautiful scenery.
Sitting just off the coast of Africa, it is the largest of the Canary islands (which belong to Spain). As well as mountains with hiking trails, Tenerife also has endless beaches with both white and black sand that have been a location for many famous movie shots over the years.
2. Rovaniemi, Finland
Rovaniemi is the Official Hometown of Santa Claus, and the city’s most famous resident can be visited every day of the year in Santa Claus Village right on the Arctic Circle, an attraction that draws more than 500 000 annual visitors from all around the world.
While most people come here in December, it’s worth visiting in January too. There’s husky and reindeer rides, snowmobile tours, design items and souvenirs, ice and snow constructions, and an igloo hotel.
3. Vienna, Austria
Vienna has the cobbled streets, baroque buildings and imperial palaces in this beautiful city where Sacher Tort and culture are king.
From legendary coffee houses to secretive tunnels on the grounds of Vienna’s palace, this is a city that has beauty on every corner. Snuggle up in a cosy cafe and soak up the regal atmosphere.
4. Amsterdam, Netherlands
This charming 17th-century canal-covered city has heaps of interesting sights that will keep you busy for an entire weekend, or even longer. Forget about cliched images of smoke shops and gaudy red lights… This is easily one of the coolest cities in Europe.
Sure, it might still be chilly, but wrap up warm and you’ll have a brilliant January getaway.
5. Budapest, Hungary
Brimming with intriguing architecture and rich cultural heritage, Budapest still feels slightly untouched by tourists.
Check out local ruins bars, enjoy a river cruise along the Danube, or meet locals on a walking tour. This city truly has it all, and the local exchange rate makes it an ideal vacation spot for travellers on a budget.
6. London, England
Pretty pink restaurants, futuristic space-age toilets and jungle skyline views are just some of our favourite things about London. And of course, all the classics: Big Ben, red phone boxes and world-class museums and galleries. No wonder it’s one of the top city breaks in Europe.
The best thing about London is there’s always something to do – even in January!

When it comes to city breaks, it seems that Barcelona offers it all. From stunning beaches and a rich party culture to excellent culture and one of the best food scenes in Europe, Barcelona is a traveller’s paradise.
