The Romanian capital, Bucharest is in the south of the country and home to 2 million people. Recently becoming known as the “new Berlin”, there’s some seriously cool things to do in Bucharest.

Home to the real-life prince who inspired Dracula, historic churches and vibrant beerhalls, you won’t be bored here. In fact, you probably won’t really want to leave.

It’s a city with huge history stretching back centuries and you can see and feel that as you walk around its gorgeous streets.

Best things to do in Bucharest

1. Check out the (huge!) Palace of Parliament

Fun fact: this is the world’s second-largest administrative building (after the Pentagon). The guided tours of this extravagant building are a must. Take in the grandeur of the marble and gold in more than a thousand rooms.

2. Visit the Museum of Senses

When was the last time that you experienced something for the first time? At this fascinating museum, that’s exactly what you’ll experience. Journey through a Vortex tunnel, an infinity mirror room and endless exhibits that will make you question everything.

4. Booze in Bucharest’s oldest beerhouse

Caru’ cu Bere (The Beer Cart) is not only one of the oldest bars and restaurants in the city, it’s also one of the most popular tourist attractions in Romania’s capital. It’s over 130 years old, with the vaulted ground floor in Neo-Gothic style is richly decorated with paints, stained glass, mosaics and carved panelings.

5. Have a picnic in Cişmigiu Garden

A beautiful, leafy park with stone bridges, plenty of benches to rest on and scenic cafes. It’s a favourite hangout spot for locals, and you’ll see why once you step inside.

Cişmigiu Lake freezes over in winter and is magically turned into an open-air skate rink, while in summer you can rent pedalo boats to float around on it.

6. Wander around Carturesti Carusel

This incredible bookstore spans across six floors; with its winding staircases and gorgeous natural light you’ll get the perfect Bucharest Instagram shot. It houses over 10,000 books and a bistro on the top floor. It does get busy, so come midweek if you want plenty of space to browse.
