`The French port city of Marseille is a gritty-yet-charming city with a scenic port, a vibrant market and lots of character. There’s some great places to take snaps for Instagram in Marseille.

1. Vieux Port

The Old Port is the beating heart of Marseille, with a hive of activity and waterfront restaurants. Every morning from 7.30 to 12.30am, the fish market takes place, which is a great sight to see. Stroll down again at dusk to see it all lit up.

2. Cours Julien

This beautiful neighbourhood is the largest district in France dedicated to street art. The pretty streets are home to local designers, artists, thrift shops, second-hand dealers, book sellers and comic book stores. Wander through the streets located between Cours Julien and Place Jean Jaurès to see walls covered in graffiti.

3. Notre Dame de la Garde

This ancient cathedral is the symbol of the city. It’s on the highest hill near the Old Port, at 150 metres. The golden statue of Mary in the basilica needs to be gilded with 500 grams of gold every 25 years. The view from here makes for a great Instagram in Marseille.

4. Le Panier

Marseille’s oldest quarter, Le Panier (the basket) has the look of a Provencal village with its fountains and leafy trees. Have lunch in place de Lenche, a square with a fantastic view over the church la Bonne Mère.

5. Noailles

This neighbourhood is home to a thriving market, Marché des Capucins. It’s a feast for the eyes with fruits and vegetables, butchers, fishmongers, exotic foods and spices, with a vibrant African community and vibe.

6. Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations

This modern glass cube museum has become an icon of modern Marseille. At the end of the historic pier, the stark contrast of the museum is beautiful. Old and new combine for this amazing Instagram spot in Marseille.

Just 20 minutes along the coast, this is a picturesque fishing village. There’s charming terraces and restaurants for an aperitif with a view. If you’re planning to visit Marseille, the Vallon des Auffes is one of the must-sees.
