Albania is full of natural beauty, ancient history and delicious food. With beaches that rival Greece and unique culture, it’s not hard to see why more and more visitors are flocking to the Mediterranean nation. Whether you’re headed to bustling Tirana or coastal Sarandë, here are the seven best things to do in Albania.

Unmissable Things To Do In Albania

1. Rozafa Castle – Shkodër

Rozafa Castle is one of Albania’s many beautiful castles. Perched atop a rocky hill and flanked by rivers and just a hop away from one of Albania’s oldest towns, this castle can’t be missed. Stroll the castle grounds that weave tales about the Medieval and Ottoman period in addition to legends of human sacrifice.

We recommend spending the morning exploring the castle and then hitting nearby historic Shkoër.

2. Lounge in Sarandë

The Albanian Riveria is loaded with pristine beaches. Whether you’re looking for hidden oasis’ or bumping party beaches, Albania’s coast has it all. We recommend spending a day at Sarandë’s Pulebardha to rejuvenate and take in the sun and sea.

3. Eat Byrek

A trip to Albania simply wouldn’t be complete without eating byrek at least a dozen times. This Albanian pastry is made up of flaky dough and jam-packed with spinach and cheese. Take your pick from Tirana’s dozens of bakeries and indulge in a delicious cheesy treat. We recommend Byrek Pizza Mario.

4. Butrint National Park – Buthrotum

Spend a day wandering through the ancient city of Butrint that time forgot. This UNESCO site consists of ruins from long-gone civilizations in addition to tons of surrounding natural areas. We recommend starting with the ruined amphitheatre and then wandering the park from there.

5. Skanderbeg Square – Tirana

Skanderbeg Square is the main plaza in Tirana and the focal point of the capital city. Named after Albania’s national hero, Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu, the square tells a story of the country’s long history. We recommend a stroll around the square to take in the many surrounding sights such as the Ethem Bey Mosque, Clock Tower and Palace of Culture.

6. The Blue Eye – Sarandë

Albania is home to a plethora of natural wonders. From rugged mountains, pristine beaches and dense forests, the tiny country really has it all. One of Albania’s most interesting wonders is The Blue Eye near Sarandë. This natural phenomenon is a seemingly infinite sinkhole and will leave you breathless.

Take in the beauty of the fairy-like waters and peaceful greenery that surrounds the spring. Moreover, the surrounding area is very walkable so be sure to carve out some time for exploring.

7. Durrës Archaeological Museum – Durrës

Lastly, The Archaeological Museum in Durrës draws tourists from far and wide for its incredible collection of artefacts during Albania’s Dyrrachium era. If you’re eager to learn more about Albania’s ancient history, this is the place to be. Spend the afternoon browsing the museum’s impressive collection of Greek, Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine artefacts from an era long gone and then hit the town.
