Whether it’s your first time in Rome or your 50th, the best thing about this city is that you’ll always discover something new each time you stroll the scenic streets. With countless museums and ancient architecture, as well as heaps of culture and gourmet food, Rome is nothing but brilliant.
Here’s the seven things you simply have to do in Rome at least once…
1. Throw a coin in the Trevi Fountain
Crowded? Yes? Worth it? Also yes. The iconic Trevi Fountain might be consistently busy with tourists and hawkers, but it’s iconic for a reason – it’s incredibly beautiful. The setting of many classic movie scenes, you can’t visit Rome without spending a few minutes here soaking it all in.
The original legend says that if you throw a coin into the Trevi – with your back to the fountain, throwing the coin with your right hand over your left shoulder – that will ensure a return to Rome.
2. Visit the Colosseum
The famous Roman landmark is an impressive sight, but plan your visit carefully to get the most out of it. The best time to visit the open-air Colosseum is during the low season from November through March, and although it’s free the last Sunday of every month it will be super busy.
For the best sunset views, head to any of the rooftop restaurants on Piazza del Colosseum.
3. Eat your body weight in Italian food
Creamy Cacio Pepe pastas, rich Roman-style tomato pizzas, Aperol Spritzes and the best gelato you’ll ever taste. Rome is a food lover’s heaven. We have the best pizzas in Rome here, while Da Felice is a top hit for Cacio Pepe and be sure to try the Supplì Baccalà (fried cod rice balls) at Dar Filettaro.
4. Stroll through Travestere
This funky, bohemian area has centuries-old charm and is a super insight into a real Rome neighbourhood that’s full of life. There’s an outdoor market to explore and plenty of winding streets.
See the gold mosaics at Basilica of Santa Maria and climb the Gianicolo Hill for views of the entire city.
5. Museums, museums, museums
Rome houses some of the most renowned museums and art galleries worldwide. Don’t miss out on these top six:
- Vatican Museums
- Galleria Borghese
- Capitoline Museums Art
- Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna
- Palazzo Massimo
- Palazzo Doria Pamphili
6. Explore Testaccio Market
If you want to feast on incredible streetfood, this is the place to come. There’s anything and everything you could ever want here; fresh pasta, fruit and vegetables, fish and meat, cheese and charcuterie, shoes, ceramics, clothes.
On the second Saturday of every month, the market stays open until midnight, when the stalls become spots for an aperitivo and there’s live music and dancing.
7. Take a Vespa tour of the city
Sure, you could rent your own Vespa and explore the city yourself, but the advantage of doing an organised Vespa tour is that you’ll learn so much more about Rome without having to worry about getting lost.
Choose from Foodie tours, Twilight, Street Art and Cinema, as well as classic itineraries. Can’t ride a scooter? Don’t worry, you can hop on the back and be a passenger.
