The 24 Places You Need to Visit in 2024

Here's the Best Places You Need to Visit in 2024

In 2023, we saw a rise in sustainable travel, multi-country trips, wellness trips, and simply experiencing travel in a way we hadn’t since before the pandemic. Now we’re looking to 2024, and we’re seeing next year’s travel trends starting to take shape. From destination dupes to seeking adventure and exploration, we’re predicting it to be an exciting year for travel. Here are 24 places to visit in 2024, based on upcoming travel trends.

2024 Travel Trends: Where to go next?

Set-jetting

When it comes to travel planning, research shows that more people are inspired by TV shows and films than social media. Seeing beautiful destinations in all their glory on the big screen doesn’t compare to snippets on TikTok or Instagram. Here are three destinations that have seen an increase in tourism since appearing on a TV show or film, and we expect their popularity to continue.

Nordland, Norway

Best time to visit Nordland: If you want a chance to catch the Northern Lights and the Svartisen glacier in one trip, we recommend going in September. The temperatures aren’t too cold yet, and the seemingly everlasting darkness of Polar Night hasn’t yet set in. But if you want to experience Midnight Sun, the best time to visit is between May and July.

Norway has been a sought-after destination for several years now, with more thrill-seekers drawn to its adventurous pursuits. The country also featured on our Top 23 Places to Visit in 2023 list, and with a 65% surge in searches after the Succession episode set in Norway (S4E5), it’s not going anywhere anytime soon. The Succession episode was shot on the Norweigan west coast, which is characterised by fjords, mountains, pristine beaches, and quaint towns. But if you want to explore remote landscapes, hike glaciers, experience Sámi traditions, and gape at soaring, craggy peaks, head to Nordland.

Nordland enters the Arctic Circle, where visitors can experience everlasting night during Polar Night and 24-hour sunshine during Midnight Sun. It’s an adrenaline junkie’s dream, but the town of Bodø is also a hotbed of culture, art, and music. Norway is diverse and huge, but if you only have time for one region, let it be Nordland.

Yellowstone National Park, Montana, USA

Best time to visit Yellowstone National Park: Every season offers something different in Yellowstone, but May and June are pleasantly warm and less busy than the peak summer season. It’s also the best time to see the baby animals, and it’s during these months that the campgrounds open, too.

Need a break from it all? There are few places in the USA more beautiful and rejuvenating than Yellowstone National Park. It’s one of the best places in the States to see wild animals in their natural habitat, as well as an abundance of jaw-dropping natural beauty. Discover unbelievable hiking trails, the vast Lamar Valley, turquoise lakes, and hot springs galore. While the park was already popular, visitors have hugely increased thanks to the popular Paramount show, Yellowstone. The show is estimated to bring an additional 2.1 million visitors to Montana per year, and despite Yellowstone coming to a close, there’s no slowing down. In September 2023, Yellowstone National Park recorded 838,458 recreation visits – a 48% increase from September 2022 (567,587 recreational visits). New group tours are popping up for Yellowstone National Park, indicating a surge in interest, searches, and bookings.

Bath, England

Best time to visit Bath: Like most of the UK, the best time to visit Bath is during the summer months. Early June to late September sees fewer rain spells and more sunny, long days. However, if you visit in spring, you’ll see Bath’s beautiful parks blooming with flowers.

Not only does Bath boast beautiful Georgian and Roman architecture, but it’s only one of the major filming locations for Bridgerton. The show is Netflix’s most popular series yet, and viewers revelled in its fantasy Regency-era world. While it’s not exactly historical, its filming locations bring the world of Bridgerton to life. The show is filmed across England, but Bath plays a huge role in it. So much so, that travel operators run Bridgerton in Bath tours, including Bath’s tourism board. Season three is set to come out in early 2024, and we’re looking forward to spotting what new Bath locations pop up on our screens. And even if you’re not a Bridgerton fan, the city’s Roman Baths, Bath Abbey, Holburne Museum, Jane Austen Centre, and many more, make it a timeless destination.

Booze-free Break

Around 40% of travellers are looking to book a trip to detox over the next year, we’re expecting to see a lot of booze-free breaks in 2024. Going on an alcohol-free trip is a time of pure clarity, energy, and enjoyment. But it’s not always easy, especially in destinations where drinking culture is intertwined with the holiday. Here are three destinations where you won’t need to worry about social pressure, and you can spend your booze-free break experiencing once-in-a-lifetime moments.

South Africa

Best time to visit South Africa: There is no bad time to visit South Africa, but if you want to visit for a safari, the best months are from May to September. June and August also happen to be the most affordable times to visit Cape Town, but safaris will increase in price.

Experience South Africa’s pristine landscape with clarity. Despite the country’s abundance of vineyards, it’s a wonderful choice for those looking to take a break from alcohol on holiday. Once-in-a-lifetime experiences are heightened by good sleep and a clear mind. Wake up early to catch the sunrise over the savannah, and connect to like-minded travellers doing the same thing. With an increase in ‘sober safaris’ and alcohol-free retreats in South Africa, more people are in search of creating clear, full-sensory, memorable, and adventurous moments. Going on a booze-free holiday doesn’t mean you have to swear off alcohol for good, but it does mean that you return home armed with stories to tell.

South Africa

Morocco

Best time to visit Morocco: Morocco is a country of contrasts – dry, desert-like summers, and bitterly cold winters. The best time to visit is in spring, from March to May.

While alcohol is available in some parts of Morocco, namely Tangier and in some restaurants in Marrakech, it’s not a part of the culture. Alcohol is also highly taxed in Morocco, so if you do spot it on a drinks menu, it won’t come cheap. That’s why Morocco has become a popular destination for those seeking a booze-free holiday, coupled with the incredible experiences you can have there. Spend the night between the golden, sloping dunes of the Sahara Desert, embrace the sensory overload of the Marrakech souks, completely unwind in a Hammam, and traverse across the spectacular Atlas Mountains – all with a crystal clear mind. And when Moroccan sweet mint tea is readily available, you’ll soon forget about alcohol.

Morocco

Sri Lanka

Best time to visit Sri Lanka: Sri Lanka’s weather changes depending on where you are – if you’re visiting the southwest of Sri Lanka, then the best time to visit is between November and April. However, if you’re visiting the northeast, the best time to visit is between February and September. But if you want to travel the whole country, the best time to visit is September to October, which is a short period squeezed between the two monsoon periods.

With so much culture, tea plantations, outdoor adventures, palm-fringed beaches, and natural beauty, there’s little need for alcohol in Sri Lanka. After facing economic uncertainty, the country is experiencing a wellness boom, prioritising mindfulness and clear connections over late nights and foggy mornings. Luxury resorts will continue to pop up in 2024, following Hilton’s suit – the luxury chain opened a resort on the coastal fringes of Yala National Park this year. The park is one of the best places to catch a glimpse of Sri Lanka’s leopards. A study found that the primary reason people want to travel in 2024 is to rest and recharge, and Sri Lanka’s soothing Indian Ocean scenery certainly delivers on that. But if you’re seeking adventure, hike through Haputale tea plantations, see elephants in the wild in Udawalawe National Park, and sleep under the stars along the Walawe riverbed.

Sri Lanka

Destination dupes

While destination dupes have long been a topic of conversation for savvy travellers, they’ve boomed recently. Maybe it’s because TikTokers picked up this idea, or maybe it’s because cash-conscious travellers are looking for more bang for their buck, but there’s no denying that people are looking for destination dupes. A study found that 1 in 3 of those surveyed had booked a destination dupe. It could be an affordable alternative to a popular (and therefore expensive) destination, or it could be somewhere that is less crowded and has not (yet) seen overtourism.

Taipei, Taiwan

Best time to visit Taipei: The shoulder season months are the best time to visit Taipei – March, April, May, and October. The peak season is during summer when prices and temperatures are at their highest. March to May offers pleasant temperatures and beautiful cherry blossom trees. October is also warm, the trees are in full autumnal bloom, and the city hosts Asia’s largest Pride celebration this month.

Always dreamt of visiting Seoul? The neon lights, late-night culture, and vibrant food scene paint an exciting picture, but those who can’t swing Seoul prices (or want to visit somewhere different) are looking to Taipei. Flight searches for Taipei have increased by 2,786% over the last year, and prices will follow suit, so now is the time to go. The Taiwanese capital is just as thrilling as Seoul, with a huge street food market culture, the world’s tallest building, and cityscape views atop lush Elephant Mountain.

While in Taipei, hop on the train or bus and go to Taiwan’s oldest city, Tainan. While Taipei is a sparkling, modern metropolis, Tainan is a taste of the ‘old’ Taiwan. Think more temples over skyscrapers, narrow alleyways festooned with red lanterns, and the scent of bubbling, savoury street food hanging in the air. The city turns 400 in 2024, so it’s a fantastic time to visit.

Taipei, Taiwan

Paros, Greece

Best time to visit Paros: If you want a quiet, relaxed getaway, then the best time to visit Paros is May to June and September to October. The temperatures are still high, but not too high, and there are fewer tourists.

Picture the scene: jumbled white-washed flat-roof buildings sit on a hillside overlooking the indigo Aegean Sea. You soak up the Cycladic charm as you stroll through twisting cobblestone alleys, a hint of pink bougainvillaea in the air, visiting blue-domed churches and ancient remains. No, you’re not in Santorini – you’re in Paros. The island is arguably just as charming and beautiful as the ever-popular Santorini for a fraction of the price. There’s less demand, fewer crowds, and more spending money for the seafront fish restaurants, swanky beach clubs, and exploring inland villages. There are also plenty of soft-sand beaches to relax on – something that Santorini is lacking.

Paros, Greece

Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, Mexico

Best time to visit Puerto Escondido: The best time to visit Puerto Escondido is between November and March. December arguably has the best weather of them all, but any month in that time frame will provide sunny days and few showers.

Tulum is loved for its boho vibes, jungle parties, white sand beaches, wellness lifestyle, and DJ events. However, in recent years, the huge influx of tourism has hindered what was so special about Tulum – the feeling of exploring an undiscovered, bohemian dream. And it’s not just the tourist shops and crowds that are doing Tulum a disservice – the prices have skyrocketed. Enter: Puerto Escondido. With beaches that are just as beautiful as Tulum’s, music events, yoga studios, surf shops, and a spiritual vibe, Puerto Escondido is an excellent (and way more affordable) alternative to Tulum. For context: entrance to Puerto Escondido’s music events is either free or up to around $15, while travellers in Tulum can expect to pay between $100 and $300. And Puerto Escondido has something that Tulum hasn’t had in a while – local culture. Away from the main beach areas, you’ll find a thriving local community where you can try some of the country’s best mezcal and lip-smackingly good food.

Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, Mexico

Vietri Sul Mare, Italy

Best time to visit Vietri Sul Mare: As Vietri Sul Mare is not as touristy as other parts of the Amalfi Coast, you don’t need to worry about overcrowding in the peak summer season. However, if you plan on travelling around the Amalfi Coast, we recommend sticking to May or October for pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds.

The Amalfi Coast is a dream destination for many, with scattered flat-roof buildings clinging to cliffsides giving way to expansive Mediterranean Sea views. And while the main tourist towns, Positano and Amalfi, are still characteristically beautiful, they’ve become crowded and expensive. Vietri Sul Mare is a small town on the Amalfi Coast, where the prices are cut in half. Visitors still get the gorgeous cliffside views, delicious seafood, and Aperol Spritzes on the beach, but for a fraction of Positano or Amalfi’s prices. And unlike many other Amalfi Coast beach towns, Vietri Sul Mare’s beaches are wide, open to the public, and free. Vietri Sul Mare is also one of the only towns in the region with a train station, where trains go directly to Naples. The town is known for its bright ceramics, which cover the houses on the narrow, winding roads.

Trending property types: Farmhouses and barns

Escape to the country when staying in one of 2024’s trending property types. Breathe the fresh air, spot cute animals, and soak up the pastoral scenery when staying in a farmhouse or barn in a rural setting. Don’t know where to go? Here are three destinations that have an abundance of beautiful farmhouses and country stays.

Basque Country, France

Best time to visit the Basque Country: Visit the Basque Country between May and September for optimum weather, good surfing waves, and lively towns. Beach towns like Biarritz will close much of its restaurants and bars during the off-season, so we recommend visiting in summer.

Avoid thinking of the Basque Country as a part of France. It’s an autonomous region with its own culture, food, traditions, and in some cases, language. Stretching across southwest France and northern Spain, the Basque Country comprises towns, cities, and rural areas in the Pyrenees Mountains. The Spanish Basque Country is well-known for its foodie cities of Bilbao and San Sebastián, but for rural living in the pretty countryside, head to the French Basque Country. There are a high number of converted farmhouses here, surrounded by fields carpeted in wildflowers, views of the surrounding Pyrenees Mountains, and the blues of the Bay of Biscay. Traditional Basque farmhouses are characterised by whitewashed brick, terracotta tiled roofs, and baby blue or red shutters.

Cairngorms National Park, Scottish Highlands, Scotland

Best time to visit the Scottish Highlands: The Scottish Highlands are always beautiful and each season has its own charm. Summer is a great time for wild camping and wild swimming, while spring is the best time for wildflowers and baby animals. However, early autumn (October - early November) is cheaper than spring and summer, and you can still experience long, sunny days and beautiful autumnal colours.

More travellers are swapping hotels and villas for cosy barn conversions and farmhouses, and if waking up with sweeping views of mountains and fields sounds like heaven to you, then the Scottish Highlands is the place to be. The Highlands stretch a wide area, but if you want to tick off the main highlights: mountains, beautiful hikes, shimmering lochs, wildlife, quaint villages, adventures in nature, and castles – head to the Cairngorms. In this rural area, much of the accommodation is converted barns, farmhouses, and cottages, making for the perfect cosy place to relax after exploring the UK’s largest National Park. Climb a Munro (a mountain over 3000 ft), cycle through forests, and kayak down rivers. The Cairngorms is particularly popular with climbers, too.

Nova Scotia, Canada

Best time to visit Nova Scotia: Winters in Nova Scotia can be harsh, and the weather will only start warming up in May. This is a good time to visit for cheaper prices and fewer crowds, but summer is unbeatable in Nova Scotia.

Rugged, beautiful, and wild – Nova Scotia, surrounded by the foamy Atlantic Ocean, is an unforgettable destination. This Canadian island is characterised by expansive green spaces, traditional lighthouses, excellent seafood, glowing sunsets, and candy-coloured houses perched above craggy shorelines. Farm and barn stays are some of the most popular accommodation options here, with rural beauty on your doorstep.

Celtic and Acadian cultures are embraced in Nova Scotia, where most residents descend from Ireland, Scotland, or France. After a day fishing, hiking, and tucking into huge lobster platters, celebrate the Celtic culture and go along to a lively ceilidh. In 2024, Nova Scotia will host the Acadian World Congress, or Congrès Mondial Acadien, where travellers can take part in the celebrations. The fun centres around music, food, and dancing. It’s hard not to fall in love with this warm-hearted, Maritime island.

Your Next City Break

City breaks have long been loved by travellers, but 2023 saw more people searching for a quick escape. While the most popular city breaks are Paris, New York, Barcelona, and London, here are some beautiful alternatives.

Mombasa, Kenya

Best time to visit Mombasa: Monsoon season is quite unpredictable in Mombasa, but it mostly falls in April and May. June to September tend to be the best times to visit for beautiful sunny days and infrequent showers.

A city break can look like many things. It doesn’t have to be fast-paced museum, cafe, and bar hopping. Sometimes, it’s lying on a white sand beach in the coastal city of Mombasa. Spend year-round sunny days on Mombasa’s Nyali Beach, or take the hour-long drive to Diani Beach – one of the world’s best beaches. The city also has a rich heritage with its melting pot of different cultures – you can spot the various cultures in the Old Town, with its mix of architectural types. To feel the buzzing heart of Mombasa, head to one of the markets: Kongowea is the most popular. Mombasa is also one of the most affordable destinations for Brits, with pounds going far in Kenyan Shilling. Daily flights are running to Mombasa as of November 2023 and popular holiday operator TUI will begin offering package holidays to Kenya as of winter 2023.

If you’d like to extend your city trip and head further inland, you could come face-to-face with red elephants, wildebeest, and black rhinos on an adventurous safari.

Mombasa, Kenya

Buenos Aires, Argentina

Best time to visit Buenos Aires: The Buenos Aires springtime (September to November) is the best time to visit. The weather is glorious without being too hot in the city, and the days are long.

A vibrant city of passion and good-time energy, a city break in Buenos Aires is hard to beat. The architecture is beautiful, the prices are reasonable, the cafe scene rivals Paris, and the weather is always good – the direct translation of Buenos Aires to English is ‘good air’, after all. There’s so much to see in Buenos Aires, including Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires, El Ateneo Grand Splendid, and the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, but one of the best things to do in BA is walk through to picturesque streets and soak up the electric energy. That’s closely followed by an Argentinian steak, a glass of local Malbec, and a sultry tango performance, of course.

While you’re in Buenos Aires, why not visit the Iguazú Falls? A few days spent around the spectacular, thundering waterfalls is the perfect addition to your city trip.

Buenos Aires, Argentina

Istanbul, Turkey

Best time to visit Istanbul: Istanbul gets very hot in the summer, so while it’s a beautiful time to visit, it’s not very comfortable for sightseeing. For a city break, March to May and September to October are the best times to visit Istanbul.

Food, community, architecture, mosques, bazaars, history, a buzzy cafe culture, laidback nightlife, and endless beautiful streets: Istanbul is a city of captivating contrast. Explore the city’s forever-enchanting Blue Mosque, haggle your way through the Grand Bazaar, ogle at sculptures at the Istanbul Museum of Modern Art, and finish off sightseeing with an ice-cold Efes, watching the glowing sunset beside the Bosphorus. The fascinating sights and endless things to do could keep you busy for weeks, but even if you only have a short time for your city break, few cities can rival Istanbul. And getting there will soon be even more affordable. In March 2024, Turkish Airlines will launch AJet – a new, low-cost carrier that will connect Turkey with much of Europe (including the UK) at a lower price.

If you want to extend your city break, we recommend taking a short flight (or a long bus) to Turkey’s glistening Turquoise Coast.

Valencia, Spain

Best time to visit Valencia: The best time to visit Valencia on a city break is March to June and September to October. The weather is pleasant enough to lounge on the beach, but not too hot for sightseeing.

Why not choose Spain’s third city for your next city break? Think wide boulevards flanked with palm trees, golden sand beaches, an abundance of green space, world-famous museums, and unbeatable paella. While Madrid and Barcelona tend to take the shine for Spanish city breaks, Valencia is a vibrant and joyful place that deserves your attention. The city is also the European Green Capital for 2024. Celebrate by taking a walk through new pedestrianised areas, relaxing in Turia Gardens, or going along to the European Green Capital events. When two-thirds of travellers find the environmental impact overwhelming when choosing where to go, destinations that engage with sustainable tourism are going to be even more popular.

Valencia, Spain

Dubrovnik, Croatia

Best time to visit Dubrovnik: April to mid-June and September to October are the best times to visit Dubrovnik for a mix of exploring the city and taking dips in the Adriatic Sea.

Dubrovnik is one of the most beautiful and underrated city breaks in Europe. Croatia is touted as a fully-fledged holiday destination, meaning this medieval city is overlooked as a short break. When you simply need to get away, even if just for the weekend, Dubrovnik is the perfect place. Walking the city walls is a must, go for a dip in Kolorina Bay, take a boat trip to Lokrum Island, and simply soak up the buzzy atmosphere in the Old Town. Clinging onto limestone cliffs, this walkable, beautiful city is a joy to explore.

Group tours

Travellers are seeking authentic experiences and new adventures, and group tours lead the way. Create incredible memories and form long-lasting bonds when you embark on a group tour. Here are two destinations that we think travellers will really benefit from joining a group tour.

North Queensland, Australia

Best time to visit North Queensland: North Queensland is a tropical region and it has two seasons: wet and dry. The dry season is between April and October. August is the most ideal month to visit North Queensland.

Australia is arguably the home of group travel. It’s massive, and there’s so much to see: to put it into perspective, Australia is around 32 times larger than the UK. There’s a lot of ground to cover, so going with a travel operator makes life easier, and minimises travel-related stress. And due to its sheer size, most travellers will stick to one region. To tick off bucket list items, including the Great Barrier Reef, Whitehaven Beach, the Whitsundays, and Magnetic Island, we recommend sticking to North Queensland. Here, you get some of the best scenery in all of Australia – take unforgettable epic coastal walks, soak up the views from Castle Hill in Townsville, and bask in the waterfalls and swimming holes of Paluma National Park.

Contiki’s North Queensland Adventure has all the big hitters and more, including an optional two-night stay on a sailing yacht.

North Queensland, Australia

Kyoto, Japan

Best time to visit Kyoto: The most beautiful time to visit Kyoto (or Japan in general) is during April when the cherry blossoms are in bloom. However, it’s a very popular time to visit – May will see fewer crowds and lower prices, while the autumnal leaves of shoulder-month October are arguably just as beautiful as the blossom.

Kyoto is a real highlight in Japan. The vibrant city is your gateway to traditional Japan, a million miles from the neon-lit skyscrapers of bustling Tokyo. Experience authentic geisha culture, pay your respects at the colourful temple of Fushimi Inari and the golden Kinkaju-ji, marvel at samurai castles, and stroll through Arashiyama Bamboo District. Kyoto is also known for its traditional ryokan hotels. Between September 2022 and August 2023, there was a 125% increase in searches for ryokans compared to the same period the year before.

Some travellers like the planning, organising, and logistics that come with travelling, while others simply want to go for the ride. Japan is one of those countries that requires a lot of planning – the country is SO big, there’s so much to see, and English is not widely spoken. A group tour in Japan can hugely elevate the trip, making sure you’re visiting all the best spots and the most delicious restaurants – 86% of travellers look for local and regional food, and your tour guides have got you covered in ramen-heaven Japan. Several great tours will visit Kyoto (and beyond), including the Japan Unrivalled, Japan in a Week, and Japan Winter Wonder tours by our favourite group tour operator, Contiki.

Kyoto, Japan

Prioritising New Experiences & Exploring the Unknown

In a recent survey, 84% of travellers shared that they are prioritising new experiences while 81% hope to explore the unknown in 2024. Here are four destinations that offer incredible experiences, with little tourism.

Mongolia

Best time to visit Mongolia: July, when the rolling grasslands are bright green and the Nadaam events (horse riding, archery, and wrestling) happen across the country

For those desperate to experience rich cultural experiences, thrilling adventures, and otherworldly, boundless landscapes – you’ll find it in Mongolia. Sandwiched between Russia and China, Mongolia is an extraordinary destination. Horseriding in the Gobi desert, sleeping in colourful yurts, and road trips through the Orkhon Valley characterise a trip to this enthralling country. The tourism board are setting their sights on attracting one million tourists per year, so the time to visit is now. And in 2024, Mongolian Airlines will introduce a direct flight between the US and Mongolia, indicating a new wave of tourism for the East Asian country.

Mongolia

Guyana

Best time to visit Guyana: There are two rainy seasons in Guyana, and the best times to visit are immediately after both of them – the start of August and the end of February. The scenery is lush and extra-green, and the waterfalls are freshly replenished.

Guyana was hot on our list in 2023, and it’s still not going anywhere. It’s considered one of the last undiscovered landscapes in the world. The country is larger than the UK, yet the population is just 1 million. Most of that population lives on the coast, meaning the dense inland rainforest has been left to thrive. It’s undoubtedly the best country in South America for wildlife with remarkable biodiversity, including jaguars, black caimans, giant otters, and giant anteaters. If you’re one of the 52% of travellers seeking exploration and adventure in lesser-visited destinations, Guyana should be high on your list. To put the level of tourism into context: Guyana welcomed 149,020 visitors in the first six months of 2023, which is around 6,000 per week, and Machu Picchu sees around 2,500 tourists per day. However, direct flight routes from London to Georgetown began operating this year, so we’re not sure how long you’ll have this lush, rainforest-dense gem to yourself.

Guyana

Azores, Portugal

Best time to visit the Azores: The weather in the Azores is pleasant all year round, but late spring is ideal for whale watching.

Seeking new adventures? You’re not the only one – 52% of Generation Z and Millenial travellers are yearning for exploration and adventure. Not everyone can take on the famous Inca Trail or sail around Antarctica, but you might be able to get to the Azores. The archipelago is bursting with both adventure and beauty, encouraging visitors to get up close and personal with lush green landscapes on hikes, cycling routes, and climbs. Canyoning is another popular activity in the Azores – one that’s sure to get your adrenaline junkie heart racing. Rappel down waterfalls and navigate slippy rocks. You can even swim with Galapagos sharks between May and October.

Azores, Portugal

Akagera National Park, Rwanda

Best time to visit Akagera: The dry season, June to September, is the best time to visit Akagera National Park for sunny days and wildlife spotting.

As the only Big Five park in Rwanda, Akagera National Park is a wildlife paradise. The expansive savannah and woodland space is equal parts beautiful and adventurous, where lions, red elephants, white and black rhinos, leopards, giraffes, and crocodiles roam freely. The country’s 1994 civil war ravaged much of the park, but conservation efforts have quickly borne new life into Akagera since 2010. Wildlife was re-introduced to the park gradually, and now it’s one of the world’s most thriving savannah communities. Rwandan locals benefit, too – some 2,000 children attend the park’s education programme per year, and there’s always a need for anti-poaching staff, rangers, and guides. Akagera National Park will make its 90th anniversary in 2024, so it’s the perfect time to celebrate its sustainable efforts, adventurous pursuits, and colossal beauty.
