April sits in that rare sweet spot between seasons. In much of the Northern Hemisphere, frost and snow are replaced with cherry blossoms and sunshine. In the Southern Hemisphere, you can enjoy dry conditions and mostly reliable sunshine before peak-season prices. April also marks the start of many cultural festivals for joyful celebrations around the world. From snow-capped Arctic landscapes to turquoise island waters, here are the destinations that truly shine in April.

April 2026 Hot List: Where you should go

7. Canary Islands

What to go for: Summer-like temperatures on a budget and without the crowds

With daily temperatures of 22 – 25 °C, the Canary Islands are some of Europe’s most reliable destinations for sunny weather. Unlike mainland Spain, this Atlantic archipelago sees steady year-round warmth – without the crowds and peak season accommodation and flight prices. This shoulder season month is ideal for a budget getaway in the sunny Canaries, while generally being a comfortable temperature for both sightseeing and poolside relaxing. For the best chances of sunshine, head to Lanzarote or Fuerteventura. Tenerife offers more varied landscapes, from the volcanic landscapes of Mount Teide to lush traditional villages.

6. Trømso, Norway

What to go for: A balance of Arctic scenery with longer daylight hours

The start of April marks the end of the Northern Lights season in Arctic Norway. While the winter months have a higher chance of stronger aurora possibility, it is still possible to catch the phenomenon in early April – especially on clear, dark nights away from city lights. But the best part about visiting Trømso in April is the rapidly increasing daylight hours. The city sits above the Arctic Circle, surrounded by fjords and mountains, offering a balance of classic winter scenery with longer hours to explore it.

5. Maldives

What to go for: Great weather for water activities

April falls at the end of the Maldives’ dry northeast monsoon season, so it’s one of the best times to explore the archipelago. It’s typically dry and hot, with average daily temperatures around 30 – 32 °C. There are generally calm seas for exploration, and strong underwater visibility, which is ideal for diving and snorkelling. By late April, the chance of rain increases slightly as the southwest monsoon season approaches. But it is an excellent time to visit, especially for snorkelling with manta rays, paddleboarding in calm lagoons, and enjoying the clearer skies before wetter months begin. Bear in mind that this sweet-weather-spot month is still considered the peak season, so prices reflect that.

4. Azores

What to go for: Peak whale-watching season

April marks the beginning of whale migration season in the Azores. Located in the middle of the Atlantic, this Portuguese archipelago sits along a major migratory route. The most commonly sighted species in April include blue whales, fin whales, sei whales, and sperm whales, although the latter are year-round residents. São Miguel and Pico are two of the most popular islands for whale watching excursions – flexibility with your scheduling helps because the weather can still be unpredictable in April. On non-boat days, enjoy the archipelago’s blooming nature, jaw-dropping hiking trails (in perfectly mild conditions for hiking), and fewer crowds than the summer months.

3. Seville, Spain

What to go for: Feria de Abril

As the Andalusian capital, there’s no better place to celebrate the region’s culture than Seville. From April 21st-26th 2026, see the Sevillian streets come alive with colour, culture and celebrations at Feria de Abril. What was originally a livestock fair in the 19th century has evolved into a joyful celebration of Andalusian culture with lots of flamenco dancing, traditions, music, and food. There are also horse parades and public casetas (festival tents).

Seville is known for its microclimate, significantly hotter with less breeze than other Spanish destinations, and April sees the start of temperatures rising. Daily averages sit at around 24 – 28°C, making it comfortable for long evenings outdoors before the intense summer heat.

Be sure to book accommodation months in advance – prices soar for Feria de Abril.

2. Kyoto, Japan

What to go for: Cherry blossom season

Cherry blossom season (sakura) typically peaks between late March and early April in Kyoto, though exact bloom dates vary each year depending on temperatures.

While the Philosopher’s Path is one of the city’s most photographed sakura walks, it is far from the only viewing spot. Other gorgeouslocations include Maruyama Park, Kiyomizu-dera Temple grounds, and the banks of the Kamo River.

Hanami (flower-viewing picnics) is a deeply rooted tradition, where locals gather under blossoms to celebrate spring’s arrival.

1. Thailand

What to go for: Songkran

Held annually from 13th to 15th April, Songkran marks the Thai New Year with a splash. While recognised globally as ‘the biggest water fight in the world’, especially in Bangkok and Chiang Mai, Songkran has spiritual origins. The water symbolises purification and renewal, and many Thais visit temples during this time to honour elders. It’s also just a lot of fun, with the euphoric rush of spraying water guns transporting you right back to childhood. April is also the hottest month in Thailand, with temperatures often going above 35°C, so the nationwide water fight is a welcome respite from the heat. Fill up a water gun (they’re sold everywhere during Songkran) and get involved!
