The 7 Best Hotels in Lisbon

Europe Hotels

Lisbon is one of Europe’s best city break destinations. It has it all: history, culture, beautiful views, sunshine, art, music, food, beaches not too far away, and incredible hotels. From historical palaces to chic boutique boltholes, there are so many hotels that not only provide a place from which to explore the Portuguese capital but also to leave feeling pampered, spoilt, and relaxed. Here are the seven best hotels in Lisbon.

Stay in Lisbon's Top Hotels

1. Torel Palace Lisbon

Admire views of Lisbon’s seven hills from Torel Palace. This 4-star hotel is perched on Colina Sant’Ana, the most central of the hills, with citywide views. The hotel is comprised of three turn-of-the-century private mansions. They’ve been elegantly converted into one of Lisbon’s best hotels, with modern amenities blending with century-old touches, like the stucco ceilings and chandeliers. The best bit, though, is the beautiful views. Enjoy coffee on the terrace while taking in the sea of terracotta-roofed houses, or while away the hours by the outdoor pool. Most rooms have balconies and gorgeous views, too.

You can opt for rooms named after Portuguese royalty, with opulent decor to match, or you can choose from five modern, sleek apartments with kitchens if you prefer. We doubt you’ll want to do much cooking, though, with the 2Monkeys fine dining restaurant serving Portuguese specialities and modern takes on classics. Bear in mind that this is a 14-person restaurant, so you must book your spot in advance. Or, you can enjoy burgers, sandwiches, pasta, and other relaxed dishes from the hotel’s Black Pavilion – a restaurant that proudly boasts a front-row seat to Lisbon’s landscape.

2. The Vintage Spa and Hotel

Sometimes, good things come in small packages, and that ethos goes for the Vintage. This hotel is a cocooning bolthole, boasting 5 stars, a contemporary rooftop terrace, cool mid-century decor, and a subterranean spa. The Vintage lives up to its name with timeless designs, such as bold armchairs and dark wood furnishings, and a relic from a bygone time – a contemporary drinks trolley in every room. Mix yourself a G&T and enjoy the views of Lisbon’s terracotta rooftops.

The atmospheric spa is the pièce de résistance of the Vintage. Make use of the indoor pool, sauna, and hammam, and book in for pampering treatments. There’s reflexology, lymphatic drainage, hot stone massages, and more.

After a day of pampering or exploring Lisbon (the hotel is on the doorstep of Príncipe Real and its art galleries, restaurants, and shops), head to the rooftop terrace for a sundowner. Catch Vintage Sound Sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays for funky jazz, blues, and disco evenings.

3. H10 Duque de Loule

Blending contemporary amenities with classic architecture, the H10 Duque de Loule is brimming with charm. The hotel is bright, airy, and crisp, with shades of gleaming white and blue showcasing the classic Mediterranean colour palette. The suntrap rooftop bar, with its blue and white tiles, easily has one of the best views in Lisbon. If you need a break from the sun, especially from this high vantage point, then there are some shady corners for cooling down. The scenery stretches beyond the city and the Tagus River – it’s the perfect place for a cocktail after taking on Lisbon’s famous hilly streets.

Location-wise, the hotel is just metres from the Praça Marquês de Pombal Square and Avenida da Liberdade. This popular area is buzzing with cafe tables spreading out onto the patio, upmarket stores, and live music at night. The H10 is tucked away on a quiet avenue, so you can escape the hustle and bustle when you want to.

4. Altis Belém Hotel & Spa

The Altis offers something different to Lisbon visitors. While hilltop hotels are beautiful, there’s something to be said about a front-row seat to the Tagus. This sleek 5-star hotel lies on the banks of the river, boasting an ultra-modern, bold design in a city typically characterised by 19th-century facades. The Altis is located in Belém, within touching distance of the Belém Tower, Monument to the Discoveries, and Jerónimos Monetsary. It’s also in an excellent position for jumping on a sailboat for a sunset cruise, or you can watch them pass by from a daybed on the rooftop terrace.

Maintaining a contemporary, minimalist style, the furniture is sparse and deliberate, with floor-to-ceiling windows in every room taking advantage of the river views. Superior rooms and suites come with a balcony, but we imagine you’ll be spending most of your time in the rooftop pool, anyway.

This hotel really has everything. As well as a riverfront location and a rooftop pool, there’s the spa. The B Spa is kitted out with Oxygen spa therapy treatments, a large indoor pool, Vichy shower rooms, a hammam, and more. Food-wise, you’re spoilt for choice. The Altis was the first hotel in Lisbon to have a Michelin-starred restaurant, Feitoria, which pays homage to the voyageurs that set off from this very point and introduced new spices to Portuguese cuisine. Or you can grab a relaxed meal at riverfront Cafeteria Mensagem. Bar 38⁰ 41’ is named after the geographical coordinates used by Portuguese navigators, and offers sunset views and jazz nights.

5. Four Seasons Hotel Ritz

Sometimes, it’s best to stick with the classics. And is there anything more classic than the Ritz? As Lisbon’s first luxury hotel, the Four Seasons Ritz has managed to keep up the pace. Not least because they have a running track on the rooftop, complete with a gorgeous undulating view. The hotel opened its doors in 1959, and despite its mod-con renovations, has stayed true to its mid-century beginnings.

There’s a lot to love here, so it’s little wonder the Four Seasons Ritz was named one of Europe’s best hotels. The Ritz Pool Bar is one of the main offerings here. After a dip in the palm-tree-lined pool, keep the swinging 60s vibe going with a glass of champers and a fresh lobster roll. If you’d prefer a dip out of the sun, the spa’s indoor pool is just as inviting. Swap the post-swim champagne for a massage in the spa, or sign up for a yoga class.

While Lisbon has a lot to offer in the way of food, the Four Seasons is a restaurant destination unto itself. You can start with breakfast or brunch in the Varanda Restaurant, and end the day in the Michelin-starred CURA, with its tasting menu of modern takes on Portuguese classics.

6. The One Palacio de Anunciada

Occupying a 16th-century building, the One Palacio de Anunciada is Lisbon’s newest premier 5-star hotel. Recent renovations maintained the Palacio de Anunciada’s original characteristics while modernising the interior and amenities, to provide an all-around incredible experience. The palace’s original courtyard sits at the heart of the hotel and is where you can enjoy breakfast (which is included in your stay) as well as drinks throughout the day. The breakfast alone is worth the visit, with one of the best selections we’ve seen, as well as 20+ types of tea – from ‘detox’ and ‘digestive’ teas to wild berries and rooibos.

The hotel’s amenities are just as impressive as its tea selection, with a mini art gallery, a suntrap outdoor pool, and a spoiling spa. The spa has a unique offering – guests can book the spa for private use for up to 50 minutes, where you can use the indoor pool, chromotherapy showers, steam room, and sauna. There’s also a range of treatments and therapies on offer, from a ‘tired legs treatment’ to a hot stone massage.

7. Brown’s Avenue Hotel

Located just off the leafy Avenue de Liberdade, lined with designer shops and upmarket restaurants, Brown’s matches its swish surroundings. It’s contemporary, cool, and chic. It’s also much more than a 5-star bolthole from which to explore Lisbon. The cactus-lined rooftop pool is heaven-sent for cooling down in the summer heat, the library provides a cosy space to sip your drink while reading a book picked off the shelves, and the courtyard Avenida restaurant rivals some of Lisbon’s hotspots. There are also two honesty bars – one in the library lounge area and one next to the rooftop. Pour yourself a drink, or pick a beer from the fridge, and note what you took. It’s a helpful way to ensure no one’s waiting in line to get that all-important drink for sunset. Rather leave the mixing to the pros? There’s a cocktail bar in the restaurant. There isn’t a spa here, but guests can discounted rates at nearby Holmes Place Palácio Sotto Mayor health club.
