What to Consider for On-Time Arrival at LAS Airport

Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) is the main airport for Las Vegas and serves as an international hub in Paradise, Nevada. Handling millions of passengers every year, the airport is well-equipped with even transportation options to the famous Las Vegas Strip. Navigating your way through LAS may be confusing for new passengers, so it's best to arrive with plenty of time to spare.

Preparing your Documents

Flying from LAS requires the preparation of certain documents. If you do not have the necessary credentials you will not be permitted to fly. These documents differ every flight so it's best to check the requirements beforehand.

The essential documents usually include:

ID

If you are an American citizen traveling on a domestic flight, you would be permitted to travel with just a driving license, state-issued ID card, or Military ID. A list of valid forms of ID when flying domestically is available on the TSA website. American citizens must ensure that their government-issued photo ID is compliant with the REAL ID Act (effective May 7, 2025). You can learn more about REAL ID from the TSA’s REAL ID webpage. TSA currently accepts expired driver’s licenses or state-issued IDs a year after expiration.

Visa

If you are heading on an international flight from the USA, your destination may require you to possess a valid visa for entry. Make sure to check beforehand what the country's entry requirements are for American citizens or your particular nationality.

Passport

All international flights require a passport whether you are an American citizen or not. Double-check that your passport is valid with at least six months remaining till the expiry date. An expired passport would not be permissible for you to board your flight.

Ensuring All Documents are Up-To-Date

Check all documents beforehand and confirm that they are valid and up-to-date. This avoids any issues at the airport and ensures a smooth sailing travel experience. Verifying everything beforehand is particularly important when flying internationally. It's best to have at least six months remaining until the expiry date on your ID or passport. Any documents that have expired or are close to expiring will not be accepted and you will be turned away. For domestic flights, American citizens must ensure that their government-issued photo ID is compliant with the REAL ID Act (effective May 7, 2025). TSA currently accepts expired driver’s licenses or state-issued IDs a year after expiration. You can learn more about REAL ID from the TSA’s REAL ID webpage.

Planning your Arrival Time for Domestic and International Flights

Domestic Flights

We recommend you arrive at Harry Reid International Airport at least two hours before your departure time. Domestic flights usually allow you to skip security and head straight to the gate from check-in.

Checking-In Online

Online check-in is an excellent service to utilize when traveling from Harry Reid Airport. The online process offers extra convenience by cutting down on time at the airport. The process is simple and can be done through your smartphone or laptop. You can also select your seat and meal.

International Flights

The recommended arrival time at LAS is three hours before departure for international flights. The check-in desks close an hour before departure, and travelers must go through security following check-in.

Understanding Customs and Immigration Wait Times

Wait time during immigration at LAS varies depending on flight arrival times, passenger volume, and staffing levels. All of these factors and more influence the waiting duration, however on average, you can expect the length of time to be from 20 minutes to two hours. You can cut down on the length of time by taking certain precautions. Double-check that you have all the necessary documents at hand in advance to speed up the process.

Average Wait Time to Get Through Security

The average wait time to get through security ranges from 30 to 90 minutes. Bear in mind that peak rush hour periods will experience longer lines, whereas those flying during quieter hours can get through the security process much quicker.

Peak Hours and Off-Peak Hours

Peak hours at Harry Reid Airport typically occur during early morning (6 AM - 9 AM), late morning to early afternoon (11 AM - 2 PM), and late afternoon to early evening (4 PM - 7 PM). These periods experience high passenger volumes due to numerous departures and arrivals. Off-peak hours are typically mid-afternoon (2 PM - 4 PM) and late evening to early morning (8 PM - 6 AM), with fewer flights and less congestion. Peak times can vary with the season, day of the week, and special events, so plan accordingly for a smoother travel experience.

Navigating Security Checkpoints Efficiently

Preparing beforehand can help speed up the process of navigating security. Ensure sure you have followed the TSA regulations and that electronics have been taken out of your bag to be scanned separately. Liquids, gels, and aerosols should be no more than 100 ml each and should be placed in a clear accessible bag that will be placed separately from the rest of your belongings. Be prepared to remove items such as belts and jewelry if need be. Enrolling in TSA PreCheck or CLEAR Programs can expedite security clearance.

TSA Guidelines and Procedures

Navigating TSA guidelines and procedures at LAS requires preparation to ensure a smooth security screening process. Arrive on time, and have your identification documents and boarding pass ready for inspection at the TSA checkpoint.

At the security checkpoint, all carry-on items must go through X-ray screening. Liquids, gels, and aerosols are limited to containers of 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less, placed in a single, clear, quart-sized bag. Larger electronic devices, such as laptops, must be removed from carry-on bags and placed in a separate bin for X-ray screening. Shoes, jackets, and belts need to be removed and placed in bins unless the traveler is enrolled in TSA PreCheck, which offers expedited screening benefits, including not having to remove these items.

TSA Pre-Check: Benefits and How to Enrol

Avoid removing your shoes, belt, and jewelry during the security process with TSA PreCheck. Benefit from shorter wait times, fewer requirements at security, and reduced limits for liquids and electronics. To enroll, applicants must submit an online application, schedule an in-person appointment at an enrollment center (which includes a background check and fingerprinting), and pay an $85 fee for a five-year membership. Approved travelers receive a Known Traveler Number (KTN) to use when booking flights. Enrollment can be completed at various centers, including locations at or near LAS airport. Visit the TSA website for more details and to apply.

The Best Parking Options for Getting There on Time

The official on-site parking at LAS is highly beneficial for quick and easy access to the terminals. Terminal A parking, Terminal B parking, and Terminal C parking are three lots available for daily parking. They are located close to the terminals and offer a frequent complimentary shuttle bus service between lots and terminals. Pre-booking spaces is a more efficient method to save money and ensure availability.

Ten EV charging stations are available in Terminal B Parking on the third floor and Terminal C Parking on the second floor. The electricity provided is free of charge and prepaid economy and discount parking are available through reservations only.

Comparing Parking Lots

LAS airport features parking at Terminals 1 and 3. Both terminals offer short-term, long-term, valet, and economy parking.

Terminal 1 parking is in high demand with the Long Term garage often at capacity. Terminal 3 may be the best option if you're looking for long term parking. If you park at Terminal 3 and your flight departs from Terminal 1 you could simply take the pedestrian bridge across to the terminal and use the Terminal 3 security checkpoint. If you have luggage or children then take advantage of the tram system that connects Terminal 3 to the D Gates and Terminal 1. If your bags have to be checked in at Terminal 1, then hop on the inter-terminal shuttle. The shuttle stop is located on Level Zero, near Entry/Exit Door 55.

Choosing Between Long-Term and Short-Term Parking

Long-term parking tends to be cheaper and more beneficial for those looking to travel for a week or more. Short-term parking is typically more expensive as the parking lots are on-site providing easy access to the terminal. This would be better suited for someone traveling for a few days.

Utilizing Apps for Real-Time Flight Updates

For further convenience, utilize airport apps when flying from Harry Reid Airport. You can stay updated and enhance your travel experience by staying informed. FlightAware, FlightRadar24, and the official LAS airport app provide up-to-the-minute information on flight statuses, gate changes, delays, and cancellations. These apps allow travelers to track their flights, receive push notifications for any changes, and view airport maps to navigate terminals efficiently.

Airline and Airport Apps

Stay on top of flight updates, departure and arrival information as well as other important factors all through your smartphone. Certain airline-specific apps offer similar features to airport apps along with mobile check-in and boarding passes. Using these tools can help travelers stay informed and reduce stress, ensuring a more seamless journey through the airport.

Understanding Boarding Procedures and Gate Locations

LAS features two terminals each with separate parking, check-in, and baggage claim areas. Check your boarding pass or airline app to be aware of your designated gate number and departure time. Boarding typically starts 30-40 minutes before departure so ensure you arrive at the gate with enough time to spare.

Getting the Most Out of Airport Lounges for Comfort and Ease

Utilizing airport lounges is an excellent way to relax and prepare for your flight. They offer a great opportunity to work, shower, sleep, eat, and recharge before traveling.

Accessing Lounges

LAS offers lounges at both terminals. The Club LAS lounges is provided at terminals 1 and 3 and are accessible to Priority Pass Select members. The United Club Lounge in Concourse D is available to those who hold a United Credit Card or a United Club membership. A one-time pass of $59 can be purchased by those with a boarding pass for same-day travel on a Star Alliance, United, or partner flight.
