Getting from Denver to Breckenridge? If you’re visiting the scenic mountain town of Breckenridge, you might be flying into Denver International Airport, which is the main airport nearby. Or maybe you just want an escape from the city – state capitals can get very claustrophobic and sometimes you just want the fresh crisp air of the mountains, even in wild Colorado. Breckenridge, or Breck, is full of old-world charm, with Victorian-style buildings that particularly centre around the Old District.
Whether you’re visiting to make use of Breck’s world-class ski resort, or simply to enjoy its quaint vibe and incredibly beautiful surroundings, there are a few ways to get there. How you make the journey depends on how much time you have, how you like to travel, and what your budget is, and we’ve put together options to cater to those differences. Here are the best ways to get from Denver to Breckenridge.
Bus
The cheapest way to get from Denver to Breckenridge is by hopping on a bus. You can always count on the trusty Greyhound to take you to where you need to go – you can get the Greyhound from various stops in the city, and you want to get the one that’s going to Los Angeles and get off at Frisco. The journey takes around an hour and 40 minutes, departing several times throughout the day. Once you arrive at Frisco, you hop on another bus to Breckenridge Station. It’s around a twenty-minute walk out of town, so doable if you don’t have luggage, but you’ll probably want to call a taxi, Uber, or Lyft if you do.
Tour
If you’re in Denver on holiday or for business but you fancy a day in the mountains, a day trip to Breckenridge is a great option. There are several operators that run organised tours, taking you from Denver’s Union Station to the gorgeous mining town. You’ll make a few stops on the way too. Tour operators’ schedules might differ, but they’ll typically go to Red Rocks Amphitheater, Lake Dillon, the Continental Divide, Clear Creek Canyon, and of course, Breckenridge.
Car
If you’re craving a sense of adventure and want to take to the open road, driving from Denver to Colorado is a fantastic way to make the journey. If you’re landing at the airport, you can easily hire a car from there, but it’s usually more expensive than if you venture downtown. Be sure to do a bit of research to find the best deal.
The drive is absolutely stunning, taking you over the Contenintenal Divide, crossing the Front Range of the majestic Rocky Mountains. It’s incredible in any season, but there’s a particular ethereal beauty to it during the winter. However, drivers should bear in mind that the road conditions during winter can get icy and snowy. Sometimes they have to close for hours at a time. Colorado has strict winter driving laws, which require cars to either be an SUV or an AWD, or have special tyres. Don’t take the risk – it’s dangerous and you could face a hefty fine.
Luxury SUV
Ski resorts can be a bit fancy, and maybe you want to embrace that every way you can. If that’s the case, you can book a luxury SUV to pick you up from the airport or your accommodation in Denver and take you to Breckenridge in style. Your chauffeur will provide you with bottled water for the ride and the SUV will be kitted out with luxurious leather interior.
There are plenty of beautiful spots along the way that you might want to stop, admire, and take a picture of. This is your journey that you’ve paid a premium for, so just ask your chauffeur to stop and they’ll be happy to. This is a 24/7 service, which is an extra convenience for those early morning or late night flights. Most of the time, the vehicles can carry up to five people and usually, pets are welcome too.
Shuttle
If you’re arriving at Denver International Airport, it’s easy enough to book a shared shuttle to Breckenridge. There are several companies that take passengers to most hotels and resorts in the ski town, in comfortable vans with central heating. The trip takes around 2 hours and 15 minutes, due to the additional stops along the way. Even so, it is still a fast and affordable way to get from Denver to Breckenridge. You can try your luck and try to book a shuttle on the day at the airport, but we advise booking online to secure your place. Nobody wants to be waiting in the cold!
