North America

California ranks as the 23rd most romantic state in the US. Whilst that doesn’t seem that high, it really is home to some of the most unique romantic experiences in the country. Whether you want to watch sunsets by the ocean, sip wine in the valleys, stargaze in the desert or hike in the mountains, there’s somewhere to suit you in the Golden State. Looking to escape to the west coast with your special someone? Here are some of the most romantic getaways in California.

7 of the Most Romantic Getaways in California

1. Los Angeles, Los Angeles County

Los Angeles is one of the most romantic cities in the USA. It really does set the scene for romance with its intoxicating mix of sunshine, scenery, sea and sunsets. It’s also brimming with sexy nightclubs, romantic restaurants, romantic hotels and rooftop bars. For one of the most romantic days, start with watching the sunrise from one of the many beautiful beaches before hiking up the Hollywood Hills to soak in the views and admire the million-dollar pads. You can then turn the romance factor up another notch by enjoying a gentle gondola ride along the canals of Naples Island and Alamitos Bay. Extra brownie points if you serenade each other. As the light begins to fade, catch a sunset over the Pacific ocean before making your way to the fantastic Griffith Observatory to gaze at the stars and each other all night long.

2. Oceanside Pier, San Diego County

San Diego, with its beaches, great food and drink scene, and numerous fun activities makes for a great romantic getaway. Looking for one of the most cliched things to do with your loved one? Then head to the pretty Oceanside Pier and watch the sunset. The best thing about this activity is that it costs nothing. Oceanside Pier is one of the best places in California to watch the sunset. Located right off downtown Oceanside, this 1,954-foot-long pier is the longest wooden pier on the western United States coastline. Its silhouette and reflection in the ocean as the sun goes down create a wonderfully romantic and picturesque setting to watch those famous, kaleidoscopic Californian sunsets.

3. Carmel-by-the Sea, Monterey County

Carmel-by-the-Sea is a small beach city nestled along California’s Central Coast on the Monterey Peninsula. This charming city brims with character and style. It has fairytale cottages, secret passageways, quirky boutiques, cosy hotels and lovely waterside restaurants. The perfect ingredients for a wonderful romantic getaway in California. From the town, it is just a short walk to one of the best beaches in Northern California, which is adorned with cypress trees with distinctive wind-sculpted branches. Sink into the soft sand or splash about in the clear, clean water before heading back into the town to admire the wonderful mix of architectural styles.

4. Catalina Island, Channel Islands

Catalina is one of the most romantic places in the USA. It is also one of our top places for a romantic Valentine’s Day weekend. This charming island is located some 22 miles off the coast of Southern California. You reach it by ferry from LA. The picture-perfect paradise is an idyllic romantic getaway for those looking to relax, recharge and revive in luxury. The soft sandy beaches are ideal for sunbathing and hand in hand strolls, and the clear, calm water is perfect for swimming and snorkelling.

5. Napa Valley, San Francisco Bay Area

With its rolling vineyards, panoramic picturesque views and some of the best gourmet experiences in the country, it is no wonder that Napa Valley is one of the most romantic destinations in the US. There are lots of memorable things for couples to do here, for instance, sipping wine amongst the vines, winery tours, romantic hot air balloon rides and scenic train rides. There are also some incredibly romantic wine hotels and exclusive ranches where you can cosy up by roaring log fires, relax in outdoor hot tubs and sleep in regal four-poster beds.

7. Joshua Tree National Park, San Bernardino County

There is something incredibly intoxicating about the desert. It’s a very heady mix of heat, wilderness, remoteness, vibrant sunrises and sunsets, and unbelievable stargazing opportunities. One of the most romantic, and legendary desert landscapes in the USA is Joshua Tree National Park – a desert paradise situated in the heart of southeastern California. Here, where the Mojave and Colorado deserts meet, you can enjoy the serenity, scenery, and stars. These all seem extra sexy when shared with someone you love.
