Johor Bahru, also spelled Johore Baharu and commonly referred to as JB, is a city in southern West Malaysia. It is situated at the southern end of the Malay Peninsula. In fact, it is the southernmost city in Malaysia. It is the second largest city in Malaysia, with more than 1,065,341 inhabitants. Kuala Lumpur, with a population of 8,419,566, is the largest city. Johor Bahru is one of the fastest-growing cities in Malaysia after Kuala Lumpur.

Raja Temenggong Tun Daeng Ibrahim bin Temenggong Daeng Abdul Rahman (quite the mouthful) founded the city in 1855. The city’s name was Tanjung Putri until officials renamed it Johore Bahru (“New Johore”) in 1866.
