You don’t have to be rich to travel. You can absolutely enjoy travelling the world, even when you are sticking to a budget. So, if you’re looking for tips on how to travel on a budget or tips on how to save money when you’re travelling, then read on. Here’s our guide showing you how to travel on the cheap.

How to Travel on the Cheap

1. Travel light

Learn how to pack smart and light so that you travel with hand luggage or carry-on luggage only. This way, you will save on checked luggage fees. Many budget airlines, especially in Europe, allow you to travel with one free bag which must fit underneath the seat in front of you. Travel light and just do laundry in the middle of your trip. You can use hostel laundry facilities, laundromats or hand wash your clothes in the sink.

2. Travel to more affordable destinations

If you are travelling on the cheap, and have flexibility on where to travel, pick destinations that don’t require expensive visas. You’ll also get more bang for your buck (literally) if you pick a destination where your local currency is strong. This way your money will go further. Finally, do some research and find destinations that are more affordable. Look for places that are good for travelling on a budget. Some countries are cheaper than others, for instance, Poland is a lot more affordable to travel around than Denmark. When it comes to cities, New York is expensive for accommodation whereas Oklahoma City is one of the cheapest cities in the US for accommodation. Choose your destination wisely.

3. Travel during off-peak season

Travelling out of season is a great way to save money as hotels and airlines lower their prices to attract customers during this time. Make sure you avoid travelling during the school holidays too, as prices are hiked up during these periods. Research the cheapest time to visit your intended destination or the ‘shoulder seasons’ and make a plan to travel then.

4. Stay in alternative accommodation

Whilst usually the more convenient option, hotels are more often than not, one of the most expensive accommodation options. Choosing alternative accommodation, such as Airbnb’s or timeshares, can be a great way to cut costs on your next vacation. If you’re willing to forgo a little luxury, and a little privacy, hostels can be a super way to save money. The larger the dorm the cheaper. Just make sure you pack an eye mask, earplugs and padlock for your hostel locker.

5. Eat on the cheap

Booking accommodation with a kitchen can save you money on food and drink when travelling. Although eating out in restaurants is a great part of travelling, you’ll save money if you cook and eat in your accommodation for at least two meals a day. Eating at local food markets is also a great way to travel on the cheap. Many markets have food stalls and food trucks where you can get a meal for a lot cheaper than eating in a restaurant. Street and market food is a great way to try the local cuisine on a budget. Markets are also a great place for stocking up on food and drink for picnics or the kitchen at your lodging.

6. Visit free attractions and sights

You don’t have to spend a lot to see the sights. All destinations will have plenty of things to see and do for absolutely no cost at all. Plus, many places have free entry to museums and other cultural institutions once a month. Try to time your trip to coincide with these free entry days. Also, free walking tours are a great way to get to know a destination. Just remember that it’s customary to tip at the end. However, lots of places now have free walking tour apps that you can download and do your own self-guided tour.

7. Travel overnight

Another great way to travel on the cheap is to travel overnight if you have long distances to cover. Travelling overnight saves you on accommodation. And, as you will be travelling during the hours of darkness, you’ll have more time to explore when you arrive at your destination during the daytime.
