Rome, the capital of Italy, is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Known for its rich historical monuments, many of which are still standing thousands of years later, incredible cuisine and warm weather, Rome attracts millions of tourists every year.

Rome can also be expensive – but, if you’re savvy and look in the right places, you can find some bargain hotel deals. In this article, our travel experts have compiled a list of the 7 best budget-friendly hotels in Rome so that you can visit the Italian capital without breaking the bank.

Stay in Rome's best budget hotels

1. Hotel Altavilla

Located right next to Rome Termini Station, Hotel Altavilla is in a fantastic position for exploring Rome and beyond. The no-frills rooms are perfect for resting your weary head after a day of exploring, and each room has a desk and a television. Some rooms come with a wonderful city view, too.

While the Hotel Altavilla is not the flashiest hotel in Rome, it delivers on one of the most important factors for a city break: location. Santa Maria Maggiore is a hop-and-skip 500 metres away, and other major tourist spots are within walking distance.

2. Hotel Midas Roma

Hotel Midas Roma is slightly closer to central Rome than the Hotel Imperatori, making it an attractive choice for visitors who would prefer to avoid a commute where possible.

Found just 10 minutes by car from Vatican City (the smallest country in the world and home of the Pope), and 8km from the Trevi Fountain, Hotel Midas Roma is a fantastic choice for those wanting to visit Rome on a budget.

The hotel’s rooms all have modern amenities, including ensuite bathrooms, TVs, air conditioning and more. The hotel also has an outdoor pool in the centre of the hotel, built in a traditional Ancient Roman style, which is the ideal place to relax and cool off in the Italian sunshine.

Cost per night: From €67

3. Ginevra Palace Hotel

Ginevra Palace Hotel states that it is “a few steps from the centre of Rome”, and this could not be truer. For those who want to immerse themselves in Rome and all of its rich history and culture without spending too much on accommodation, then this is the hotel for you.

The hotel has 51 rooms and two suites, all of which are air-conditioned, have free WiFi, a safe and their own minibar which can be restocked throughout your stay.

While the hotel has its own bar and restaurant, it has the advantage of being surrounded by small Italian eateries, often offering meals at much lower prices than their city centre counterparts. Not only can you enjoy some authentic Italian food, but you can enjoy it at a lower price, too!

Cost per night: From €70

4. Rosa Italia Hotel Roma

Another central Rome bargain, the Rosa Italia Hotel Roma is a superb choice for travellers on a budget. The hotel is in an excellent location within the city, near many major tourist sites, which can be reached by car, public transport, or even on foot for those who enjoy a stroll through the city.

The hotel is less than 20 minutes by car (or less than an hour if you choose to walk) from the Pantheon, the Colosseum and the Trevi Fountain – some of Rome’s (and the world’s) most famous landmarks.

The hotel offers free coffee all day and night, perfect for those needing that caffeine hit after a long day of exploring, while all rooms have large TVs and free WiFi. The hotel is also extremely close to the Policlinico Metro B, one of Rome’s major public transportation networks.

Cost per night: From €63

5. Hotel Marcantonio

Another hidden gem in central Rome is Hotel Marcantonio, which is named after the famous Roman politician and general Mark Antony. The hotel is just a stone’s throw from some of the city’s most popular tourist destinations, but far enough away from them to offer hotel rooms at very reasonable prices.

Included in the very reasonable rate per night is a wide array of rooms, from single rooms to suites. The rooms are all equipped with smart TVs, free WiFi, vanity kits, ensuite bathrooms, safes, tea and coffee-making facilities, air conditioning, a minibar and lots more.

The hotel also offers a scheme called ‘Aladdin’s Lamp’, where guests can request (for an additional fee) certain experiences, such as a limousine ride into the city, a beachside dinner, private tours of Rome and more.

Cost per night: From €39

6. Hotel Ciao

Situated just a street away from Rome Termini Train Station, Hotel Ciao is an excellent option for travellers on a budget. It is also one of the highest-rated budget hotels in Rome from guests who have stayed there, so you are in good hands here.

With convenient transport links to major tourist destinations in the city like the Colosseum, Stadio Olimpico, Trevi Fountain and more (most of which can also be reached within a reasonable time on foot), Hotel Ciao is an idyllic budget-friendly hotel.

Its rooms include free WiFi, ensuite bathrooms, TVs, safes, hairdryers and air conditioning units. The hotel also offers free luggage storage to save you from having to carry your suitcase around all day if your room is not ready, or you want to explore Rome before checking out later in the day.

Cost per night: From €65

7. Hotel Impero

The final hotel on our list of the best budget-friendly hotels in Rome is Hotel Impero, and we might have saved the best until last. Hotels don’t come much more central than this, and for less than €70 per night, this is a real bargain.

The Colosseum Roman Forum, Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain can all be reached within a 20-minute walk of the hotel, making this the perfect hotel to stay in for exploring Roman culture and history. Even closer to the hotel are the National Museum of Classical Roman Art and the Piazza della Republica.

The hotel has 70 rooms, all of which are soundproofed and fully air-conditioned as well as including free WiFi, TVs and more.

Cost per night: From €69
