The 7 Best Bakeries in Copenhagen

Danish pastries have a world-famous reputation for being some of the best-baked goods around. And where better to sample them from than the capital of Denmark?

With options ranging from sweet and delicious treats, filled with seasonal fruits and jams to freshly baked bread and sandwiches for those wanting something more savoury, and lots of vegetarian and vegan options available, there’s something for everyone here.

Here are the 7 best bakeries in Copenhagen that you must visit next time you’re in the Danish capital.

1. Hart Bageri

One of the most famous bakeries in Denmark, let alone Copenhagen, Hart Bageri serves up a wide array of Danish classics. They also pride themselves on using seasonal fruits in their bakes, so you can expect unique creations depending on the time of year that you visit.

Must-try dish: Blackcurrant Fastelavnsboller

2. Landbageriet

Another must-visit when in Copenhagen, Landbageriet is a fully gluten-free, organic and vegan bakery. Their small shop has very limited seating, but they do offer a takeout service, so you can enjoy your fresh, hot pastry with a delicious almond milk latte to take out. What better way to start a fresh, crisp morning in the Danish capital? They also sell raw ingredients so you can take them home to bake yourself – a lovely treat for a lazy Sunday morning breakfast.

Must-try dish: Organic Chocolate Bun

3. Rug Bakery

Of course, sweet treats are generally the go-to when visiting a Danish bakery, but we definitely think that you should think outside the box and try something savoury – and Rug Bakery has some fantastic savoury offerings. How about trying one of their traditional Scandinavian breakfasts, with a boiled egg, cream, cheese and a hot, freshly baked seeded loaf? Or give their mushroom toast a try instead for a hearty, warming lunch.

Must-try dish: Pear and Mascarpone French Toast

4. Juno the Bakery

The selection of bakes at Juno the Bakery goes far beyond a few cinnamon swirls and croissants. Here you can try their own buttery biscuits, handmade in the shop and available to take out in a tin (ideal for a present for someone) or to enjoy in-store with a delicious coffee. In 2024, they were voted the Best Bakery in Copenhagen, so don’t just take our word for it – get yourself there and try out their delicious range of baked goods.

5. Andersen & Maillard

When a bakery prides itself on its coffee as much as its pastries, you know it's the perfect spot for a quick stop-off in the city. Alongside their wonderful selection of decadent pastries, brownies and cinnamon rolls, they also have some of the finest sandwiches in the city – encased between their fluffy, well-seasoned focaccia dough, made daily. You can buy a sandwich to take out or enjoy it in the warmth of the bakery with freshly roasted coffee.

6. BUKA

‘Embracing the love of butter and flour’ is the tagline of BUKA – simplicity at its finest. But once you open the doors, you’ll see that their bakes and combinations of flavours are far from simple. Will it be a rich cardamom almond cream, blackcurrant gel, vanilla-flavoured flaky pastry, or a classic pistachio croissant? But be warned: once you’ve been to BUKA, you will want to go straight back again, and again, and again!

Must-try dish: Chocolate and Vanilla Spandauer

7. Sankt Peders Bageri & Konditori

Translated into English as Saint Peter’s Bakery and Pastry Shop, this is without doubt one of the best bakeries in Copenhagen. It is also Denmark’s oldest bakery, first opening its doors in 1652. And when a bakery has been up and running for almost 400 years, you know they’re doing something right. From decadent sweet treats like cruffins (a hybrid of a croissant and muffin) to savoury favourites like poppy seed brioche buns, each bite you take is a bite into the history of Copenhagen.

Must-try dish: Pistachio Lenten Bun
