Mexico is a top travel destination for people from all corners of the globe looking to indulge in the nation’s incredible food, vibrant culture and beautiful scenery. Whether you’re planning to visit or are just curious, here are a few things that are iconically Mexican.

Here is a List of The 7 Things Mexico Is Famous For

Incredible Food

1. Incredible Food

It’s no secret that Mexican food is one of the world’s most beloved cuisines. After all, who doesn’t love a taco? Mexican food is so famous and admired in fact, that it even has its own UNESCO status. In 2010, Mexican cuisine was officially deemed by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity

Ancient Temples

2. Ancient Temples

Mexico boasts one of the world’s most vibrant and rich ancient history. The evolution of the first Mesoamerican civilisations such as the Olmec, Maya, Zapotec and Aztec can be seen all across the nation. Especially in the form of temples, pyramids and other ruins. The most famous among them are the Chichen Itza, Palenque and Teotihuacan.

Powdery White Sand Beaches

3. Powdery White Sand Beaches

For a nation as large and geographically diverse as Mexico – we’re talkin’ mountains, volcanoes, lush jungles, lunar desserts – beaches take the cake for Mexico’s most famous landscape. And it’s not hard to see why. With more than 9,000 kilometres of coastline that boasts more than 500 beaches, sand and sun are pretty special in Mexico. Thanks to its wide diversity between regions, there are many different types of beaches from the cliff hewn shores of the Gulf of California to the tranquil paradise waters of the Caribbean.

Chocolate

4. Chocolate

Mexico is famous for being one of the best chocolate destinations in the world, and it’s not without reason. After all, Mexico is the birthplace of chocolate! That’s right, the Olmec Indians are thought to be the first harvesters of the magic cocoa some 4,000 years ago. If you plan to visit Mexico, be sure to tour a chocolate plantation to learn about the process from bean to bar.

Day of the Dead

5. Day of the Dead

Mexico is home to some of Latin America’s most iconic festivals. Namely, Day of the Dead or Dia de los Muertos. The annual event held on November 1 each year is a huge celebration of loved ones who have passed away. The celebration traditionally involves decorating an ofrenda (family shrine) and enjoying family gatherings. There are also countless lively and colourful parades held across the nation full of revellers with intricate skull face paintings and elaborate costumes.

Mariachi Bands

6. Mariachi Bands

Yet another UNESCO recognised aspect of Mexican culture is mariachi music. Mexico’s regional folk music is one of its biggest claims to fame and is famous all over the world. Traditionally a mariachi band will consist of four or more members dressed in charro suits and playing a variety of guitars and brass instruments.

Cathedrals

7. Cathedrals

Mexico is a deeply religious country with over 80% of Mexicans identifying as Catholic. Thanks to this, Mexico boasts some of the most stunning cathedrals in the world from the Catedral Metropolitana in Mexico City to Cholula’s colourful Santa María Tonantzintla and Los Remedios. No matter your destination in Mexico, you’ll never be too far from a historic cathedral or crumbling remnants of one.
