Best steaks in Sydney
1. Firedoor
You probably think you’ve had good steak, but you’ll never know the best until you eat here.
Firedoor’s kitchen uses no gas or electricity, instead relying only on fire. Food is flamed over wood-fired ovens, three grills and a wood-burning hearth. And don’t worry, it’s an open kitchen so you can see all the action.
They don’t always have beef on the menu (it changes daily), but when they do it is special. This 191 day dry-aged beef rib cooked on the open flame is a prime example. An absolutely world-class experience.
2. BLACK Bar & Grill
This is the place to come if you want to dress up for a fancy meal, or have celebrate something. This is fine dining at the highest possible level, with chefs and front of house staff who are the best in their respective fields.
Their signature dish is a 28 day dry-aged Wagyu rib eye, which is monumentally tender and absolutely bursting with flavour. It’s then lightly smoked over a wood-fired grill for a rich flavour.
You’ll be dreaming about that steak as you go to sleep.
3. The Meat & Wine Co
With three locations in the city (plus a further three in Melbourne and one in Perth) you are never far away from one of their dining rooms, and that’s a very good thing.
Just inside Sydney’s iconic Intercontinental Hotel, Circular Quay is the most impressive setting with deep leather banquettes and private dining areas. This is a properly atmospheric restaurant.
The steaks come in all shapes and are cooked using a unique African basting technique. The end result? A beautiful steak that melts in your mouth.
4. LP’s Quality Meats
Technically you might call this a roast dinner or BBQ platter rather than a steak, but when it tastes this good who is arguing over the finer details? At the heart of LP’s Quality Meats sits a Southern Pride Smoker shipped straight from Tennessee.
The dry-aged smoked ribeye comes medium rare and has a side of Yorkshire pudding, dripping with beef fat. The platters are intended to share, but when this food tastes so good you’ll be tempted to keep them for yourself.
The dining room is informal and the perfect place for a huge ‘n’ hearty meat feast wit zero pretentiousness.
5. Porteño
While countries around the world cook steak in their own different ways, there is little argument that the Argentinians are among the masters. This is one of the best Argentinian restaurants – not just in Australia, but probably anywhere outside Argentina itself.
They are obsessed with all things meat and cooking on fire. Steaks are cooked in a number of inventive styles, with something to please everybody.
A must try is their Entraña with chimichurri and BBQ peppers. One of the best Sydney steaks you will ever taste.
6. BISTECCA
This classic Italian steak house and cocktail bar takes its nam from the famous steak from Florence. They do bistecca wonderfully here. The steak is presented to diners before being cooked fireside over charcoal to a perfect medium-rare.
It’s then left to rest and served in traditional Italian fashion: well-seasoned with salt, pepper and a drizzle of olive oil. The cosy dining room has a central open hearth, butcher’s block and domed ceilings with brick cladding.
And to drink? The wine list here is every bit as good as a steak of this standard deserves. A true classic.
7. Prime Steak Restaurant
This is a classic New York-style steak house that has been serving up incredibly good steaks for 20 years now. They never let the standard slip; it blows you away each and every time you dine here.
Prime Steak Restaurant showcase 18 of the best steaks in Australia on their menu, including Wagyu, Black Angus and Angus-Hereford Yearling.
