North America

New York is one of the most romantic cities in the USA. Even Hollywood agrees as more romantic movies have been filmed here than in any other city over the past 20 years. There are so many wonderfully romantic places in NYC where you can gaze into your lover’s eyes, stroll hand in hand, cuddle up close and whisper sweet nothings to each other. Thinking of taking a city break to the Big Apple with your significant other? Here are some of the most romantic places in NYC.

7 of the Most Romantic Places in NYC

1. Empire State Building

Admiring the twinkling lights of the skyscrapers from the top of the Empire State Building might be cliched, but it is still an incredibly romantic experience. With your special someone by your side, you feel like you are on top of the world. The 360-degree views of the Manhattan skyline are breathtaking especially just before sunset when the city transitions from day into night. It gives you butterflies. This is also one of the most romantic places in NYC as so many romcoms have been filmed here and loads of proposals happen here too. It’s the perfect place to pop the questions, just saying.

2. Central Park

With its elegant trees, colourful flowers, tranquil lakes and secluded spots, Central Park is one of the most romantic places in New York. It’s also a great spot for couples on a date as there are so many things to do. You can rent a boat and row right into the heart of Central Park and into the heart of your lover too. You can cuddle up together and enjoy a gondola ride and take a photo at Bow Bridge, which is one of the prettiest parts of the park and another ideal spot to propose. The Ramble is another romantic spot. With it being off the beaten track, it is a great place to avoid the crowds and enjoy a peaceful stroll hand in hand with your loved one.

3. Grand Central Terminal

Trains stations are enduringly romantic and conjure up images of times past. Grand Central Terminal in NYC has to be one of the most romantic train stations in the world. With its glorious celestial ceiling and ornate architecture, you are surrounded by beauty. However, one of the most romantic places inside Grand Central Terminal is the whispering gallery. You’ll find it on the lower ground floor where the walkways intersect and opposite the Oyster Bar (a lovely romantic restaurant). When you and your loved one stand in diagonally opposite corners facing away from each other, you can whisper sweet nothings through the tiles and you will both hear them despite the noise and the crowds. The neat architectural feature is a wonderfully charming acoustic oddity that just happens to be in one of the most beautiful places in NYC.

4. Riverside Park

If it’s good enough for Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks, then it is good enough for everyone. Yup, that’s right, this Upper West Side park was featured in the romantic movie You’ve Got Mail. Now it’s your turn to reenact a rom-com as you stroll arm in arm around the urban oasis that is Riverside Park. With its colourful, fragrant blossoms and waterside setting, this is a pretty place to escape the concert jungle and enjoy a bike ride or a picnic or just sit and relax on the bench watching the world go by. This park is rarely overcrowded so you’ll usually find a quiet spot where you can just bask in nature and in each other’s company.

5. Hayden Planetarium

Look at the stars, look how they shine for you! The Hayden Planetarium is the perfect place for a night of romance under the stars. Whatever the weather, the celestial bodies are always visible at the Hayden Planetarium in the American Museum of Natural History. Enjoy a romantic evening of stargazing and take in a stellar show in the Star Theatre. Finished gazing at the heavens? Spend the rest of the night gazing lovingly at each other. You’ll be starstruck and lovestruck too.

6. The Met Cloisters

Take a romantic trip to Europe without leaving NYC. The Met Cloisters is a stunning secluded and peaceful place that showcases the art and architecture of medieval Europe. The building itself is beautiful but it is the garden that is the real romantic treat. The Cloisters is located in lovely Fort Tryon Park and has gorgeous panoramic views of the Hudson River. A walk around the Cloisters is without a doubt one of the most romantic things to do in NYC.

7. Lincoln Center Fountain

At the Lincoln Centre, you can get your culture fix watching a world-class ballet, play or opera. However, the most romantic show doesn’t take place inside but outside at the lovely Revson Fountain at Josie Robertson Plaza. When it is lit up at night the water fountain is incredibly pretty and romantic. Plenty of couples stand around admiring it creating a gorgeous atmosphere for a romantic date. Better still, there are five-minute water shows throughout the evening when the fountain explodes in a dazzling array of colours.
