Without a doubt, the Antarctic region is one of the most unique areas on Planet Earth. One of only two continents situated entirely within the Southern Hempshire (the other being Oceania/Australasia, of course), a visit to Antarctica is one of the most adventurous holidays you can experience.
So you may be wondering, what can you get up to in Antarctica? You’d be surprised at quite how much there is to do – it’s the perfect place for adrenaline junkies and outdoor enthusiasts, that’s for sure. Cruises around the Antarctic are not for the faint-hearted – the infamous Drake Passage is notorious for its incredibly stormy conditions, so only the bravest of seafarers need to travel here by boat.
However, Antarctica is home to some of the most incredible wildlife and scenery on Earth. Thousands of penguins line the icy shoreline, huddled together in enormous groups to keep the biting cold away. Amazing marine life such as leopard seals and orcas (killer whales) patrol the dark waters, and seeing these in the wild beats ever seeing them in a tank at a zoo.
However, if you’re looking for something else to do away from the shore, why not look at Mount Vinson, the continent’s highest mountain? Or, if you’re ready for some relaxation, take a dip in the natural hot glacial springs to help you warm up while outside temperatures can reach as low as -40℃.
Believe it or not, there’s even a fully-operating pub in Antarctica, where you can enjoy a quick drink at the most southerly bar in the world – that’s worth writing home about!
