Take a tour of the Taliesin
One of Madison’s most popular tourist attractions is the Taliesin, an architectural masterpiece by Frank Lloyd Wright. Also known as Taliesin East, this remarkable structure covers more than 600 acres of sublime countryside. We recommend taking an excellent guided tour of the property, swinging by the Romeo and Juliet Windmill and Midway Farms, swimming in the adjacent waterfalls, and grabbing a bite at the visitor center with a café. To reach Taliesin from the airport, take Co Hwy K before turning right onto US-12 W and turning right again onto US-14 W, before taking left onto County Hwy/Rd C all the way to the sculpture. It’s a scenic 1-hour drive.
Drive along the waterfront
Perched on Madison's spectacular waterfront, the 16-acre-large Olbrich Botanical Gardens features exotic foliage from all over the world. Started in 1952, visitors from all over the state and nation come to admire its remarkable collection of roses and glass-enclosed Bolz Conservatory. In addition to guided tours, the botanical gardens also host art shows, concerts, and educational programs for kids and adults. From the airport, head north on International Ln, turn left onto Anderson St, right onto Wright St, left onto Milwaukee St, right onto Walter St, and finally, right again onto Atwood Avenue. Although that sounds complicated, it’s only 14 minutes by car.
Get cultured
The Chazen Museum of Art is another must-visit while in Madison. It displays paintings, sculptures, prints, photography, and applied/decorative arts, showcasing both European and American artists. Some names you may recognize include Shusaku Arakawa, Rodin, and Gainsborough. In addition to their permanent collections, they also regularly feature traveling exhibits and a great chamber music program. There's also a fantastic café adjoining the museum. Once you leave the airport, it’s a breezy 17-minute drive to Chazen Museum of Art. Head north on International Ln, use the left 2 lanes to turn right onto Packers Avenue and continue onto E Johnson St to take you straight to the museum.
