Previously known as La Crosse Municipal Airport, La Crosse Regional Airport (LSE) is a public airport situated 5 nautical miles northeast of the city center of La Crosse in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The airport itself is perched on the northern part of French Island, adjacent to the Mississippi River. This is the 6th busiest commercial airport in Wisconsin in terms of passengers served, out of a total of 8.
The airport is spread across 1,380 acres (558 hectares) and has 3 runways. A contemporary two-story passenger terminal with 3 gates serves the airport. 6 daily departures and arrivals with direct service to Chicago, Detroit, and Minneapolis are provided by two major airlines, Delta Air Lines (served by Delta Connection) and American Airlines (served by American Eagle).
A fun fact about this seemingly nondescript airport is that the Boeing 747 Air Force One (AF1), one of the world's largest passenger aircraft, has made overnight visits to this airport with every US President for the past 20 years.
Driving in and around La Crosse Regional Airport
La Crosse, a charming city on the Mississippi River's banks, is one of Wisconsin's most beautiful yet underappreciated communities. La Crosse has it all for visitors, including unique stores, entertainment venues, museums and galleries, and even festivals held in the downtown area. Read on to find out some of the best places you can drive down to from the airport:
Riverside International Friendship Gardens
The Riverside International Friendship Gardens are magnificent gardens located at the confluence of the Black, La Crosse, and Mississippi Rivers. The gardens, which cover half an acre and include French, Chinese, Russian, Irish, German, and Norwegian gardens, are entirely accessible for wheelchairs, and visitors may explore them on their own or take guided tours conducted by docents and horticulturists. From the airport, continue to Dawson Ave before taking I-90 ALT to 2nd St N in La Crosse. Continue on 2nd St N. Drive to E Veterans Memorial Dr and you’ll be there in 14 minutes.
Mount La Crosse Ski Area
The Mount La Crosse Ski Area offers a diverse winter paradise for winter sports lovers. Since 1959, the ski resort has been a popular winter destination, with the mild Mileway Trail, Wisconsin's longest nursery slope, welcoming newcomers. At the other end of the spectrum, daredevils will relish the challenge of the Damnation Path, the state's steepest ski trail. Skiers and snowboarders can choose from 18 trails served by a rope tow and three double chair lifts between the two extremes. There are lessons offered on-site, as well as a Terrain Park to explore. From the airport, take Dawson Ave and Bainbridge St to Copeland Ave/I-90 ALT, then follow I-90 ALT, South Ave and Mormon Coulee Rd to Old Town Hall Rd. Turn left onto Old Town Hall Rd and you’ll be there in 25 minutes tops.
Dahl Auto Museum
The Dahl Auto Museum honors antique vehicles and autos, as well as the country's long history of automobile production. The family-owned and run firm also pays homage to the Dahl family's century-long engagement in the car industry, which has spanned five generations of Dahls. The museum includes a detailed history of the vehicle as seen through the eyes of the world-famous Ford Motor Company, as well as a display of superbly restored and maintained historic automobiles from the turn of the century to the current day, as well as a large mascot collection. The Dahl Auto Museum is open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. from Thursday through Saturday. From the airport, continue to Dawson Ave before taking I-90 ALT to Division St in La Crosse.
