Things to do in Huntsville
Learn about US space history
The Marshall Space Flight Center is the largest space center in the US. It’s situated within the Redstone Arsenal, an army base - so you’ll need a permit to visit - but it’s definitely worth it. First, spend some time exploring the visitor area (the US Space & Rocket Center). After this, join a bus tour of the larger space center. The various exhibits on the tour explain how NASA operates and give you a brief overview of the agency’s history.
Stroll through Big Spring Park
With its cherry trees, red bridge, and flocks of geese, ducks, and koi, the Big Spring Park is a central part of life in Huntsville. The heart of the park, the Big Spring, is Huntsville’s primary water source. After you’ve had a walk through the greenery, visit the Huntsville Museum of Art, which exhibits over 2500 artworks from the Southeastern US, Asia, and Europe. If you’re in the mood for a live performance, book tickets for a show at the Von Braun Center, the city’s largest multipurpose arena.
Practice your ax-throwing
There aren't a lot of places in America where you can throw axes for sport, but Huntsville is one of them! The city has a number of ax-throwing venues, of which Civil Axe Throwing is one of the best. You can book a session of either 30 minutes or one hour. The organizers will provide you with a target board, instructor, and safety protocols.
Eating out
Toybox Bistro isn’t just a great American restaurant – it’s also a nerds’ paradise! Enjoy the rings o’ fire or chicken sandwiches here while surrounded by posters, action figures, and other references to the pop culture of the early 2000s. For Asian-influenced food that is as delicious as it is beautiful to look at, head to Phat Sammy’s and try the squid with Korean BBQ sauce. Blue Bayou, located in what appears to be an antique train car from the 1920s, gives you the best of Southern cuisine. At Connors Steak and Seafood, enjoy the shrimp with grits as you take in the lakefront views.
Huntsville Transport
Airport
The Huntsville International Airport (HSV), located 15 minutes away from the city center, has connections to several major American cities.
