Cancun has a rich history that embraces the diversity of two historical cities: Zona Hotelera and Maya. Zona Hotelera offers idyllic Caribbean beaches, while the Maya culture embraces the history of the city and the diversity of local flavors. Along with this, Cancun is known as the gateway to the Yucatan Peninsula and is famous among Americans who want to experience Mexico for the first time. Whether you’re looking for good food, great nightlife, or a unique culture you won’t find anywhere else in the world – Cancun is the ideal city to visit for something for everyone. Just make sure you check the rules and laws in the country before you visit, just to ensure your safety when visiting an unfamiliar country.
Things to do in Cancun
Cancun is full of diversity, history, and plenty to do – you will never get bored here. Whether you’re looking for an adventurous day out snorkeling or a traditional ceremony, Cancun has it. But what is a ‘must’ when you’re visiting this incredible city of culture?
Visit Downtown Cancun
Downtown Cancun will give you a taste of the local culture (literally), as well as showing you all the city has to offer. Whether you want to look at small Mexican shops or walk through lush parks – you’ll find it in downtown Cancun. Also known as Ciudad Cancun, the downtown city is the main residential area for locals in the area, so there is a lot of life and bustling energy in the city – it really is the heart of Cancun. When you visit downtown Cancun, you will want to walk down to Avenida Tulum – especially if you’re a foodie. Here you will want to get your hands on authentic Mexican tacos, and when you want to walk off your food you can head to the family-friendly park called Parque Las Palapas.
Go Snorkeling and see the Underwater Museum
Cancun has some of the most gorgeous beaches, and the Caribbean Sea is something to be seen – which means it is perfect for snorkeling. Cancun is home to the Underwater Museum, which has over 500 sculptures that were created from materials that encourage and help the coral reef to thrive. You’ll be able to swim through hands, statues, VW Beetles, and all sorts of ocean wildlife during your snorkeling trip, it really is an experience unlike any other. For less than $30, you can swim your way around the museum and learn along the way all about the natural habitat in the country.
Attend a Temazcal Ceremony
The traditional Mayan ceremony of purification is called a Temazcal Ceremony. This traditional ceremony takes place in a small hut, where you are expected to remove your clothes and enter a sweat lodge. The ceremony is then led by a Shaman, and it takes place in complete darkness, as they pour hot water all over hot rocks and chant to summon local spirits. This ceremony has been performed for hundreds of years and has been seen as a way for people to cleanse their mind, body and their soul too. People have said that during the ceremony they feel as though they are in a deep meditative state and feel fully relaxed while the Shaman chants. It is a truly humbling and calming experience, we highly recommend.
Give Zip Lining a go in the Jungle
We all know that ziplining is a great way to see places from a whole other perspective, and the zip-lining opportunities in Cancun are unbelievable. There are a couple of options if you’re in the city when it comes to zip lining. The closest park to the center is Selvatica, which offers over 10 different zip lines. A little further out, you will also find the Xplor Adventure Park, which is home to the highest zip line in Mexico at 147 feet high. If zip lining isn’t your idea of fun, but you have friends and family who want to go, the parks also usually have other opportunities such as mini golf and other activities – so you don’t have to feel left out.
Eating Out in Cancun
Whether you’re in the mood for a comfortable atmosphere downtown, or looking to dress up and grab yourself a Michelin-star three-course meal – you will find it eating out in Cancun. The classic Yucatecan cuisines on offer include items like cochinita pibil and panuchos, which are famous throughout Mexico. An increasing number of restaurants are bringing in inspiration from the Caribbean, creating new menus all year round. The diversity of the culinary scene will keep you wanting more when it comes to eating out within the city.
Transport in Cancun
The best way to get around Cancun is definitely by car – so we would recommend hiring a car if you’re headed to the city. By booking a car in advance, you will ensure you get the best deal, at the best price and have endless options of cars to choose from. By booking your own car, you will have the flexibility to explore more of the city, as well as around the area too. You never know, by hiring a car, you might just find a hidden gem that you otherwise wouldn’t see. If you choose to hire a car, you will have the benefit of being able to get yourself from the airport to your accommodation and vice versa. However, if this option isn’t available to you, there are also a bunch of options you have to consider. Once at the airport, there are loads of shuttle services that offer rides from the airport into Cancun – so you have super speedy options to get yourself into the city. Along with this, you also have the option of taking other forms of public transport, such as the ADO bus, but this is far less reliable. Taxis are always on hand, just make sure you know the unwritten rules of the country when it comes to tipping and learn about fares beforehand, so you know what to budget for your trip.
