Geography

Weymouth is a popular tourist destination in Dorset, right on the shore of the English Channel. As of the 2018 census, the population of Weymouth was 53,068. It is located on a bay at the mouth of the River Wey, some 11 kilometres (7 miles) south of the county seat of Dorchester. Following Bournemouth and Poole, it is Dorset's third-largest city.

Summers in Weymouth are pleasant; winters are long, cold, and rainy; and it is windy and partly overcast all year. Throughout the year, the temperature normally ranges from 4°C to 20°C, with temperatures seldom falling below -1°C or rising over 24°C. Warm-weather activities are best enjoyed in Weymouth from late June to mid-September.

Culture

Weymouth’s name is derived from ‘Waimouthe,’ which has been in use since at least 934. The name of this area comes from the mouth of the River Wey, an old English river whose meaning and origin are lost to time.

Relax on Weymouth Beach

Weymouth's 3-mile-long immaculate Blue Flag beach is one of the most stunning in the country. It is located in the middle of town, near the old port, and features a length of beach known as the Esplanade, which contains various fast food kiosks and fish and chips sellers. Traditional amusements for children include Punch and Judy performances, donkey rides, swingboat rides, gaming arcades, and ice cream treats. Don't miss Sandworld, a gallery run by Mark Anderson and David Hicks on the south end. You will be astounded to witness magnificent sand sculptures of renowned movie actors from shows such as Game of Thrones and The Jungle Book, among others. Explore the Nothe Fort

The impressive three-tiered structure known as the Nothe Fort stands at the entrance of Weymouth Harbour. When the Royal and American navies established a base at Portland in 1872, the Victorian Era historical site played an important part in Britain's defence. The sweeping views over Dorset's Jurassic coast from the fort's ramparts and parapet are breathtaking. Explore the dimly lighted subterranean halls and tunnels, as well as the wonderful museum on-site that displays mementoes, guns, cannons, and other weapons. When you hear the myth of the Whistling Gunner, the spirit of a gunman that purportedly haunts the corridors with his creepy whistling, prepare to be terrified. Getting Around Weymouth

Travelling is fairly easy with an efficient bus network in and around the city and extending to Portland and Dorset. The railway station is near the beach. You can also get taxis at affordable rates.
