Visit Newry Cathedral
Everyone loves visiting a cathedral – and Newry is one not to be missed. The A-listed Gothic cathedral in the heart of Newry was constructed in the 1820s and still stands proud today.
When Thomas Duff first designed the cathedral, people were shocked at its beauty and came from all over the country to witness his creation. Since then, creations have been made that added a tower, chancel and transept – making it the cathedral everyone knows today.
We recommend heading into the cathedral itself, rather than just being mesmerised by its external features – as the inside is beautifully decorated thanks to artisans from all over Italy. The marble dressings and mosaics in the cathedral took five years to complete in total – so it is well worth a look inside to truly see it in all of its glory.
Go and see the Ballymacdermot Court Tomb
There are a few Stone Age monuments in and around Newry, but none quite compare to this burial site with stunning views of the south of Ballymacdermot Mountain. Historians believe that the monument itself was active over 5,000 years ago – making it one of the oldest known burial sites in Ireland. With views of the Meigh Plain, there is also a circular court that has three distinct champers that are remains of tombs. The rooves of these tombs would have been held up by corbels, but have since crumbled under the weight of time. While you’re exploring these tombs, you will want to see the Bernish Viewpoint, which offers incredible views of Newry and surrounding areas that you won’t see anywhere else.
Walk the Newry Canal Way
The first summit-level canal was found in Newry, but is now defunct. It was built to get coal from Tyrone to Carlingford Lough. Although it is no longer a working canal, you can walk (cycling or run!) the 32-kilmetre section all the way to Portadown. This route follows the path that was once used by horses that pulled the boats along the canal and now can be walked to see some of the most beautiful landscapes Northern Ireland has to offer. If you choose to walk this scenic canal walk, you will have the opportunity to see 14 locks, old bridges and the Jerrettspass, Scarva and Poyntzpass; three beautiful villages in the area. When you reach Scarva, you also have the opportunity to see the old Terryhoogan aqueduct and Lough Shark which is adored by anglers from all over the country.
