The River Aire and Leeds Liverpool Canal both run adjacent alongside and beneath the station which sits at ground level to the front beneath the flamboyant Queens Hotel, a grade II listed building, and the station is raised from the rear above a network of tunnels and arches with the river Aire flowing directly beneath it as well as the quay system for the canal directly behind it making up Granary Wharf.

To the south of the station, and accessible by the new steps and entrance to the rear, is Granary Wharf. A modern and clean square surrounded by the river, canal and quays. This area is now a trendy and popular part of Leeds containing numerous bars, coffee shops and restaurants, and across the road from Holbeck Urban village now made up of renovated mills and warehouses into offices and apartments. The Hilton Double Tree is located in Granary Wharf and has a rooftop cocktail bar directly overlooking the station and the rest of the city.

The train station is operated by Network Rail and has 17 platforms. It connects the city of Leeds directly with London Kings Cross, the Midlands, the South West and York & Edinburgh on the East Coast line.
