Things to do in Denbigh
Denbigh Castle
Denbigh Castle, or Castell Dinbych, is a fascinating ancient castle from the Middle Ages. It’s one of the best-preserved Edwardian ruins in the area, having been built in 1282. Peaceful countryside surrounds the grounds, making it a wonderful place to walk around and take in the scenery. The main feature is a triple-towered gatehouse for optimum security, which was finished in 1305 after Denbigh was attacked by Madog ap Llewelyn in 1294. Cae Dai Trust
Step into the 1950s when visiting this specialty museum. Allow a good few hours to really explore this place – it’s deceptively sprawling and packed with nostalgic items. You can really get a feel for the place, there’s even a kettle left on the side for you to brew your own cup of tea. History buffs will love it, but the owner’s impressive commitment to collecting relics is interesting for anyone. They’ve even got their hands on the cab of the lorry that was involved in the 1963 Great Train Robbery.
Llyn Brenig
Located on Denbigh Moors, Llyn Brenig is a manmade reservoir – built between 1973 and 1976. It being manmade doesn’t make it any less impressive. Especially for those who like to fish – it’s one of the UK’s best lakes for trout fishing. Sailing and paddle boarding is popular here, too. But if you prefer to stay on land, you can take the 9.5 route around the lake – you can either cycle it or enjoy the long walk and look out for ospreys along the way. Finish off with a cup of coffee and a cake in the café. The kids will love the adventure playground, too.
Horseshoe Pass
This mountain pass links Llantysilio Mountain to Cyrn-y-Brain, curving into a horseshoe shape – giving it its name. The views are beautiful and it’s a great drive, especially if you plan on hiking across either of the mountains. The scenic route is also a fantastic picnic spot – a destination all on its own.
Ruddlhan Castle
Just a fifteen-minute drive outside of Denbigh is another impressive castle. Building this castle began in 1277, as instructed by King Edward I. Edward liked his castles to be by water, but Ruddlhan was several miles inland. The plan was to build it by Clwyd River instead, but it wasn’t quite in the right spot – what else to do but instruct hundreds of workers to dig the river and move its course? It’s known as the castle worth moving a river for, with impressive twin-towered gatehouses and an inner diamond-shaped stronghold.
