Bedford is an old medieval market town in England. This small and humble town is one of the most culturally diverse towns in the whole of the United Kingdom, with 10% of its population coming from Asia and nearly 30% of Italian heritage. Given how culturally varied the people of Bedford are, it is no wonder that the town itself reflects this. The town is home to some very high quality restaurants with cuisine from all over the world – so everyone will be able to find something they like when visiting this market town.
Along with eating out and the culture that surrounds Bedford, there is also a little something for everyone when it comes to finding things to do and see. From fascinating museums, to parks, sporting facilities and a bustling art scene, nobody is left out in this gorgeous town as everyone truly is catered for.
From historical landmarks, outdoors activities and art galleries to museums, cinemas and more modern attractions – a trip to Bedford will be remembered for years to come, no matter how long you decide to stay for or whether you’re staying for work or pleasure.
Things to do in Bedford
As we’ve mentioned, there is so much to do and see when visiting Bedford – no matter what you’re into. From art galleries to architecture, history to entertainment, you’ll be sure to find something you enjoy on your trip.
See the Michelangelo Fresco
Most people wouldn’t think that the wall of a coffee shop would be so interesting – but trust us, this one is the exception. On the corner of Howard Street and Mill Street you will find a two-story recreation of Michelangelo’s infamous Libyan Sibyl. The artist who recreated the 1500 BC piece of art spent three months on the piece and people from all over the country now come to visit and see the artwork in all of its glory.
Take a look at the suspension bridge
Everyone in and around the local area of Bedford knows about the beautiful suspension bridge. The iron bridge was officially opened in 1888 and offers pedestrians and cyclists a way to cross the River Ouse safely. This scenic bridge is the perfect place to capture that all important travel selfie, or take beautiful snaps of the local area. The bridge is known as the ‘unofficial symbol’ of Bedford – so is a must visit.
Try a John Bunyan Boat Cruise
For weekly cruises along the River Ouse, you will want to hop aboard a John Bunyan Boat. The John Bunyan Boat Cruise travels from the town centre to the Priory Marina and Kempston and is a specially volunteer-run cruise line that locals are extremely passionate about. The cruise line also offers the occasional special theme cruise, such as their fish and chip cruises and jazz night cruises. You will be able to leisurely cruise down the river and take in all of the sights, as well as indulge on their cream tea to make the afternoon that bit more luxurious and memorable.
Hire a canoe, kayak or paddleboard
Although cruises are great, some of us want to be a little bit more involved when it comes to seeing the sights. Canoe Trail offers water-based transport hire and are the towns favourite. Whether you’re after a canoe, a kayak, a paddleboard or other smaller boats, all with safety equipment and briefing included, then this is definitely what you want. People from all over come to the Canoe Trail to hire their very own water-based transport – most of whom have never been in charge of such a thing before. Most instructors will also provide you with a map and a few recommendations as to what to see when you’re on the water, but otherwise you’re free to explore wherever is safe to do so.
Eating Out in Bedford
Bedford is jam packed full of fantastic restaurants and eateries, no matter what you fancy. Thanks to its culturally diverse population, influences from all over the world can be seen when eating out in the small town.
There are so many food options in the town, but two of our favourites include:
Herd
The small, intimate and unique burger place has limited burgers to choose from – but for good reason. Herd is a perfect place for anyone to come and try something new (or grab your go-to burger). Each option is individually prepared using high-quality and local ingredients, which is perfect for those wanting to have a little taste of Bedford. With one veggie option too, nobody is left out when it comes to burgers at this perfect little burger place.
The Pavilion
The Pavilion is a friendly and local restaurant in the heart of Bedford’s award-winning park. Situated amongst leafy greenery, the Pavilion serves food all day, every day. From all day breakfasts, to lunches that will keep you fuelled for a whole day of exploring, it is the perfect place to grab a bite to eat. We also love that there is an option to sit outside on the heated veranda, so you can absorb the beauty around you while you indulge in a beautifully prepared meal. This restaurant is inclusive and sure to have options for everyone, no matter what they fancy.
Transport in Bedford
It is extremely easy to get around Bedford either by walking, cycling or public transport – and most people in the area opt for these options given their ease. Walking is especially popular in Bedford, as the paths are safe and there is so much to see on your travels.
Although it is possible to access most of the town by foot, bike or public transport, it might be a better option for you to bring a car (or rent a car) if you’re thinking of going further afield. For day trips or trips just outside of the town, or if you need to ensure you’re somewhere on time, it might be best you decide to drive, as this means you won’t be bound to timetables – just make sure you remember your map.
