Guide of Marmaris

Geography

Marmaris, in Mula Province in southwestern Turkey, is a popular Mediterranean port and resort town on the coast of the Turkish Riviera. Marmaris was a quiet fishing community until the latter part of the 20th century when it had a building boom that left little trace of its earlier character. It is situated between two sets of overlapping mountains near the sea. It has two large marinas and numerous smaller ones, making it a hub for sailors and scuba divers. With Dalaman Airport within an hour's drive to the east, this city is a favourite wintering spot for hundreds of cruise sailors.

Climate in Marmaris

Hot, dry summers and moderate, wet winters are typical of Marmaris' hot-summer Mediterranean climate. From May to October, rainfall is quite rare. Extreme heat and dryness characterise the summer months, with the hottest days often occurring in July and August. Even though it's still warm and sunny in October, there are occasional showers, and most visitors choose to come in September or earlier when the weather is more comfortable. Wet and warm winters are typical. Most of the precipitation occurs in the winter, starting around November. If you're looking for some rays, the months of June through September are ideal for a trip to Marmaris. The warmest month is July, with average highs of 35°C and lows of 25°C.

Culture

In the 6th century BC, the area presently known as Marmaris was called Physkos (sometimes spelt Physcus), located in a region of Caria that belonged to Rhodes and boasting a splendid harbour and a forest consecrated to Leto. In 3000 B.C.E., a fortress stood there, as recorded by Herodotus. Caria was conquered by Alexander the Great in 334 BC, and the Physkos citadel was besieged at that time. Realizing they had little chance against the approaching army, the town's 600 residents burnt their possessions in the castle before fleeing to the hills with the women and children. During the rule of the Beylik of Menteşe, the city's name was changed to Marmaris, from the Greek màrmaron (marble) to the Turkish mermer. This was done to honour the city's storied history as a port for the marble trade, which flourished in the area.

Things To Do in Marmaris

Catch some rays on the spectacular beaches

It is common knowledge that Marmaris is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Uzunyali Beach (which is sometimes referred to as Long Beach) and Marmaris Urban Beach are considered to be two of the most popular beaches in the area. They are right in the centre of the city as well as next to each other, making beach hopping a breeze. Visitors are allowed swim whenever they so choose on any of these beaches. Due to the fact that vehicles are not allowed on the promenade, the surrounding area is packed with a wide variety of eating establishments, pubs, retail stores, and coffee shops.

Participate in exciting outdoor sports

Marmaris is full of fantastic activities for those who want a rush of adrenaline. Some of these activities include 4x4 offroad safaris, mountain bike rides through the woods, jet-ski rides, canoeing, and horse safaris, among many other outdoor sports. Horseback riding and off-road safaris in 4x4 vehicles are two of the most well-liked activities among the numerous available options. These safaris take tourists on exhilarating roads that zigzag up and down through the woods and rivers, finally bringing them to one of the most breathtaking and panoramic vistas the country has to offer.

Admire the dancing fountains

Those who are fortunate enough to see one of the breathtaking nightly performances of the dancing fountains should not miss out on the opportunity. The performance lasts for around half an hour and consists of water shoots that are timed to music as well as lights that are brilliant and vivid. Every night, there is a huge audience for this “concert” because it is free. You can also visit during the daytime as it still retains a great deal of its charm! It is not unusual for visitors to this location to make a wish while throwing a penny into the fountain.

Eating Out in Marmaris

If you fancy dining in an establishment with its fair share of history, drive to the Fener restaurant. Established more than 40 years ago, the restaurant still offers its patrons extraordinary service and charming views of the sea. As they are near the sea, you can be assured that the seafood served there every day will be as fresh as they come. Apart from that, they also serve Mediterranean meals and snacks as well. Turkey also serves up some of the best baklavas in the world. Baklava consists of thin and flaky buttered phyllo sheets covered in pistachios, nuts, and syrup, which are baked until they are golden. While it is popular as a daytime snack, it can really be eaten at any time of the day as a sweet dessert. The best baklava in Marmaris can arguably be found at Bahadırlıoğlu Baklava.
