Didim, a small town and a popular coastal resort, is located on the Aegean coast of western Turkey, around 123 kilometres (76 miles) from the province's capital city of Aydın. It is perched on the Bodrum Peninsula, with Golturkbuku, Gundogan, and Yalikavak to its north and Akbuk Bay and Lake Bafa to its east.

Culture

Didim was named after the Ancient Greek sanctuary of Didyma, which is located just inland from this popular resort city on Turkey's Aegean Coast. Formerly known as Yoranda or Yoran under the reign of the Ottoman Empire, the city was given the name Hisar ("Castle") by the present Turkish Republic. After the town was completely destroyed by an earthquake in 1955, it was reconstructed under a new name Yenihisar ("New Castle"). Until 1991, the town was a part of the Söke district. In 1997, the region was elevated to the status of a top-level district within Aydn Province and renamed Didim from its historic name to set it apart from the several other locations in Turkey with the same name.

The temple, which was originally constructed during the Hellenistic period as an open-air structure, is now open to the public. The name Didim derives from the ancient city of Didyma, which was not a city but a religious centre that was linked to Miletus by the Sacred Way. It was along this route that the pilgrims travelling to Didyma sought the answers to their big questions about life.
