Guide to Visby
Visby’s stellar history stretched way back to the Stone Age when it was a sacred sacrificial site. It gained prominence as a major trading hub in the 11th and 12th centuries and became the main centre of the powerful Hanseatic League, a trading body which united various wealthy city-states across the Baltic sea and was dominated by German traders. The Danes conquered Gotland in the 14th Century and ruled through a turbulent time until 1645, when Sweden took control under the Treaty of Bromsebro.
