Guide to Umeå
Umeå is another Swedish city whose aesthetic ambience and architecture was affected by rebuilding after a serious fire. It’s nicknamed ‘City of Birch trees’ because this species was planted along every street following a devastating blaze in 1888 and the reconstruction which followed focused on fire prevention, with expansive plazas like the Rådhusesplanaden constructed as elegant firebreaks. ‘Uma’ means ‘roar’, hence the roiling rapids of the River Ume give the city its name.
