Guide to Kiruna
In its modern incarnation, Kiruna was founded in 1900, but there’s evidence that it’s been inhabited for 6000 years and the area was originally inhabited by the indigenous Sami people before modern Swedes were attracted by the discovery of iron ore. When mining started in earnest in the early 20th Century, the makeshift dwellings of the early miners were replaced by a more modern town and associated infrastructure and road, rail and air links were established.
History of Kiruna
Kiruna is literally a town on the move ̶ the settlement is undermined and will shift 3km to the east, out of the way of the old iron workings. There are some interesting buildings here, most notably a distinctive church, and it’s also close to Jukkasjärvi, which is 17km to the east and the home of the famous Icehotel, which is a major tourist attraction. The iconic structure which is carved afresh from solid ice each winter season is now complemented by Icehotel 365, a permanent lodging open all year round.
