Guide to Karlstad
Karlstad suffered two major fires in the 17th and 18th Centuries, followed by a devastating inferno in 1865 which razed the entire town to the ground, leaving only seven buildings standing. However, it rose like a phoenix from the flames, complete with expansive streets and vast squares designed to halt the progress of any future blazes. There’s a plethora of parks and lakes to stroll around here and it’s a magnet for culture vultures thanks to its connection with artists like Lars Lerin and writers like Selma Lagerlöf.
