Resting in southwestern Spain, in the province of Seville, lies the very pretty and historic town of Carmona. Despite being small, it's famous for its thriving trade in wine, olive oil, grain, cattle, and holds an annual fair in April. The depth of history this Town boasts is represented in its very name, "Carmona". With its Semitic origin, 'Kar' meaning City, addressed as "Carmo" by the Romans and "Qarmuna' by the Arabs, this Town is one of the oldest in entire Europe. Whilst roaming this town you'll find yourself engulfed in history, as though you've been magically transported back to the Neolithic period to the Roman era, the Middle Ages or the 1930s! Captured by Ferdinand III of Castile from the Moors in 1247, he then gave the town the motto: 'As the Morning Star shines in the dawn, so shines Carmona in Andalusia.'
The Moorish buildings as well as many fine buildings from across the ages add to its beauty, and despite being a small Town, there is a surprising amount to see in Carmona. Things to do in Carmona
Carmona, Spain will be one of the most relaxing places that you’ll visit on your Andalusia trip. You'll feel a sense of peace as you wander around, absorbing all the architecture, history and beauty. Each site tells a different story, capturing you with its depth and mysteriousness. It's a town that must be explored thoroughly, on foot, without haste! Make sure you make full use of the Tourist Office, as they run complimentary group guided tours of the town from Wednesday to Sunday except in July and August.
Cordoba Gate
This is a fabulous piece of ancient architecture that you'll drive through on your way into town. The gate is boarded by two octagonal turrets and dates back to the Roman times. It was then altered in the 18th century to the monument that you see today. There were originally four gates in the town and only two remain, the other being, 'The Gate of Sevilla'. Whilst you're here it's worth popping into the Tourist Office as it's right nearby. You'll find a lot more information on the town and the staff are very helpful.
Carmona Fort
Known as 'Alcazar de la Puerta de Sevilla', or Fort of Carmona, this place is a must see, you'll be stunned by the fabulous design and spectacular views. The Carthaginians constructed the gate itself, and the Romans reinforced the fortress with the addition of a gate in the 14th and 15th centuries. There isn't a huge amount to see inside, however the unforgettable views of the town from the Tower of Gold, makes it definitely worth the visit, and its nearby remains date all the way back to the 7th Century BC.
Carmona Town Hall
The best part of this Town hall, is that it houses a hidden gem - an extremely well preserved Roman tiled floor. It features a head of Medusa, and you'll find this hall located on Calle el Salvador.
Convento de Santa Clara
This site is usually the favourite of most visitors of Carmona. This gothic church is a great example of Andalusian Moorish architecture from the 16th century. You'll be blown away by its stunning architecture, and the interior is simply breath taking. To top it off, you're even able to buy cakes from the nuns! If you're lost for picking out souvenirs to take back home as gifts, then these well packaged cakes of Seville are a great option!
Eating Out in Carmona
Carmona has a range of different restaurants and cafes serving up some of the most delicious Spanish and Mediterranean food. Head over to Restaurante La Cueva to sink your teeth into a fusion of Spanish, Asian and international cuisine. The location is fabulous with the restaurant built inside a cave giving the atmosphere a relaxed and mysterious vibe. Many have claimed to have had an extraordinary culinary experience, with the 'to die for' tapas, friendly staff, and fluent English speaking chef.
A few minutes-walk from the Parador, you’ll arrive at La Yedra, which serves up some of the best food that you’ll taste on your Andalucian trip. Close by to La Yedra is Molino de la Romera. You'll enjoy this setting as it's built in a converted mill, where you can relax and indulge in their great choice of simple home cooking.
If you have a sweet tooth, then make sure you try the torta inglesa. It's a delicacy that you will not be able to resist! If you prefer savoury food, then tuck in to the alboronía or the delicious spinach with chickpeas.
Transport in Carmona
Despite being a small town, Carmona still fantastic transport links taking you in and out of the area by buses and trains. Seville is a 40-minute bus ride, and if you're driving from Madrid, Córdoba or Seville, then it's best to take the N-IV/E5 motorway.
Within the town there are local bus and taxi services, however it's recommend to spend as much time as possible walking, as Carmona is a place to be explored. It is peaceful everywhere and can easily be explored on foot.
