Sometimes referred to as ‘the third Rome,’ Moscow definitely lives up to its glowing reputation. The incredible architecture of the city, and the history behind the buildings there, are all reason enough to visit – but if you need more convincing, don’t worry, there are many more reasons. Although Moscow is the perfect place in Russia for the history-fanatics among us, there is so much more to the city too. The combination of history and modern leisure activities means Moscow is a hotspot for tourists from all over the world wanting to experience a bit of Russian culture. From the Kremlin to the Gorky Park, there is a little something for everyone here.
Whether you’re aware of the cultures and history of Russia, or you’re foodie looking to try some of the local cuisine – you’ll find something to fall in love with in this mesmerising capital city.
Things to do in Moscow
No matter where you are in Moscow, there is something new on offer. From the Business District, to the Red Square – you will fall in love with something in this incredible Russian city. No matter where you go, you’ll be immersed in history, culture and a fantastic atmosphere unlike anywhere else I the world. And, despite the stereotypes, the Russian people are welcoming and love to show tourists what their city has to offer.
Moscow Kremlin
The Red Square is one of the oldest and largest squares in Moscow and is home to the infamous St Basil’s Cathedral. With its multicoloured domes and gorgeous gateways, it is the perfect introduction to the Kremlin. Situated just beyond Lenin’s Mausoleum, this cathedral was built purely to capture the hearts and souls of the Russian people and all who visit here. You’ll be able to step into the State History Museum, along with the Museum of Fashion, as well as enjoy a walk through the Aleksandrovsky Garden while you visit the Moscow Kremlin.
Bolshoi Theatre
For another historic masterpiece, you’re going to want to visit the Bolshoi Theatre. This theatre is home to the famous Russian Opera and Ballet and has been held here for centuries. The performances that take place here have never once lost their importance within Russian culture. In fact, the most talented and spectacular opera singers and dancers all seem to come from the Russian schools just to perform there. If you want a slightly less overwhelming introduction to Russian theatre, the Maly Theater is just across the road and is known as the ‘little sister’ to the Bolshoi.
Gorky Park
Known as the ‘central park of culture and leisure,’ the Gorky Park lives up to its title. With regularly-renovated recreation zones for visitors, there is a sense of Russian playfulness here. With something for all ages and abilities, the Gorky Park is the ideal day trip for families.
For the ultimate day out, hop aboard the Sokolnicheskaya Metro Line and get yourself off at Park Kultury. Here, you’ll be able to walk over the Crimean Bridge, which is the main entrance to Gorky Park and the best way to start your trip – it is so scenic, just make sure you have your camera at the ready.
The State Tretyakov Gallery
Home to the largest collection of Russian Art in the world is the State Tretyakov Gallery. Russians from all over the country come to the gallery to celebrate their artistic heritage and history – and it is all devoted to local and Russian artists. Within the gallery itself is a wide range of art, and not just the older pieces. There is a whole modern art gallery within the main gallery that exhibits political art that reflects some of the most recent events in Russian history.
Eating Out in Moscow
Moscow has come a long way when it comes to eating out in the past five years or so. Hundreds of new cafes and restaurants offering a wide range of cuisine are popping up all over the place and we cannot get enough of them. Whether you’re looking to dine in style at some of the more expensive restaurants, or want a cheap bite to eat – you’ll certainly find it in the centre of Moscow. Oh, and remember to take advantage of the brilliant lunch time deals. Lots of cafes and restaurants have a ‘business rate’ in the week between 12 and 4pm that offer discounts on lunches – so it is the perfect time to grab some food.
Traditional food you have to try, whether you’re in Russia for the first time or the one hundredth time is Borsch. Borsch is a warm beet and cabbage red soup is perfect for when you need a warm meal during the Russian winters – and trust us, you’ll need it. Along with this, you’ll want to try Russian pancakes and Russian dumplings, as they are staple food choices in the city. You won’t be able to find nicer Russian cuisine than in the main capital city itself.
Transport in Moscow
Travelling in and around Moscow is easier than most people think. The city itself is a series of circles and lines all stemming from the Red Square and the Kremlin. The centre is easy enough to explore by foot, and most of the sights can be seen either walking or by public transport. In fact, a CityPass is a great way to see most of the cities top attractions.
By far, the best way to see Moscow, aside from by foot, is by taking the metro. This is the fastest and most convenient public transport route, as it is more efficient than the buses and trams in the area. You could, alternatively, rent a car, but the city can get quite congested at times and if you aren’t used to driving in a European city this may be overwhelming. That being said, if you’re in Moscow for business and need to get in and out of the city in your own time – we recommend hiring a car to get you to and from your meetings in time.
