Designated the European Capital of Culture in 2007 and "Europe's 8th-most idyllic place to live" by Forbes, there are many reasons why Sibiu is one of the most visited towns in Romania. This city offers everything you might desire from an old European city, including cobblestone streets, ancient town squares, castle walls, and historic buildings. It preserves buildings from so many different eras, such as the distinctive Baroque eyebrow dorms atop many of the city's buildings, earning it the moniker "The City with Eyes." Its friendly locals and fascinating local customs and festivals only add to the city’s charm, and it certainly helps that you’ll be hard-pressed to find the throngs of tourists that you'll see in other European capitals. A fun fact about Sibiu is that Romania's first hospital, first school, first pharmacy, first museum, and first brewery were all established here! Visiting Sibiu is a must to get a true taste of the lifestyle and culture of Transylvania. Book your Sibiu car hire in advance with Enjoy Travel for the best deals!
Guide of Sibiu
Geography
Sibiu is a city in the Romanian province of Transylvania. The city sits on both sides of the Cibin River, a tributary of the Olt River, about 275 kilometres northwest of Bucharest. Although it is now the county seat of Sibiu, from 1692 and 1791 and again between 1849 and 1865, Sibiu served as the seat of government for the Transylvanian Principality.
Climate in Sibiu
The city of Sibiu has a humid continental climate, with warm summers, cold winters, and variable cloud cover throughout the year. The average annual temperature ranges from -16 degrees Celsius to 26 degrees Celsius, seldom dropping below -16 degrees or rising beyond 31 degrees. Mid-June through early September is the ideal time to visit Sibiu for warm-weather activities.
Culture
Sibiu, located in Transylvania, served as the region's capital on many occasions. The city was established in the 12th century, and by the 14th, it had grown to become a major commercial hub. From the Hungarian Kingdom through the Transylvanian Principality to the Austro-Hungarian Empire and finally, to Romania in 1989, Sibiu has seen it all.
Things To Do in Sibiu
Spend a day at the Dumbrava Sibiului Natural Park
The Dumbrava Sibiului Natural Park, which covers almost 1000 hectares, is located 4 kilometres from the city centre. Trinkbach Brook has created three man-made lakes in the park, one in the Folkloric ASTRA Museum and two in the Zoological Garden. Take a boat trip or a walk on a hydro-bicycle among the lakes. The Dumbrava Forest is a terrace oak forest with many distinct trees and floral plant types. The woodland is home to deer, wild boar, porcupine, fox, dormouse, and squirrel, as well as birds such as the blackbird, woodpecker, dove, jay, yellow-throated bunting, owl, hoopoe, cuckoo, and goldfinch.
Visit the Lutheran Cathedral of St Mary
The Lutheran Cathedral of St Mary, with its Gothic façade, was built in sections between the 14th and 16th centuries and is Romania's tallest cathedral. Its 73-meter-high turreted steeple is the city's most recognisable feature. The four turrets at the top symbolise to visitors that the town had the authority to condemn someone to death. It was also utilised as a burial site for the city's earls, mayors, and nobles. Their tombstones have now been removed and embedded into the inside walls, creating an unsettling exhibition. Its highlights include a 6000-pipe Baroque organ and some frescoes from the 15th century. It is still in use, with regular services and weekly choir performances.
Learn about the history of the place at The Turnul Dulgherilor and Potters Tower
The ruins of walls and towers that were part of the city's defences during mediaeval times may be found around the city. The towers are linked by a mediaeval brick wall built mostly of brick and stone in the 14th century with holes for archers. The towers were repaired while keeping their original wood frames. You enter through the Turnul Dulgherilor and go to the Potters Tower. Along the path, there is an exhibition with a number of well-lit educational displays about the history of the area and the Trader's Guilds that staffed four of the towers.
Eating Out in Sibiu
Sibiu offers a wide range of eating options, from quick food joints to fine dining establishments. Here are some of our top recommendations. Restaurant Grand Plaza is well-known for its bean soup with smoked ciolan, pig knuckle, and ground pork sarmale, which are all affordable classic Romanian dishes. Crama Sibiana is a medium-priced restaurant. Tochitura, a pig and smoked sausage stew in pickled tomato sauce with cheese and eggs served on polenta is a must-try. They also have a decent wine selection. La turn is located at the edge of Piata Mare, the Big Square, under the Council Tower. It would be a fantastic experience to sit outside at a table and enjoy their delicious grilled pork plate.
Transport
Airport
Sibiu International Airport (SBZ), located 4 kilometres from the centre, serves the city. It may be reached in less than ten minutes by bus, taxi, or town car.
Getting Around Sibiu
Because the city is small, you may not need to use the public bus unless you live on the outskirts of the city. You can alternatively rent a bicycle with a helmet to get around most places. Taxis are available but expensive. Car hire is a popular option among visitors as it offers enhanced comfort and flexibility when exploring the city and surrounding areas. This is a particularly preferred option among those with children, travelling with a lot of luggage, or on a tight schedule.
