There’s much to see in Porto and plenty of picturesque road trips in the surrounding area, but if you can, take a little time to explore Sao Bento Train Station itself, because it’s absolutely beautiful.

Built in the Beaux-Arts style on the site of an ancient monastery, the station was designed by Jose Marques da Silva and inaugurated in 1916, with an amazing 20,000 traditional azulejos tiles designed by Jorge Calaco, the nation’s foremost exponent of that art form, used to beautify the interior. These blue and white tiles reach from floor to ceiling and depict the entire history of Porto’s everyday life and major historical events right up to the time of the station’s construction.

Urban, InterRegional and Regional train lines run through Sao Bento station, and it’s also on the Porto Metro Line D (Yellow). You can catch services from here to The Douro Valley and northern Portuguese destinations like Braga, Aveiro, and Penafiel.

Things to see and do near the station include:

  • Casa Museu Guerra Junqueiro, a Baroque 18th Century palace which was formerly owned by celebrated poet Guerra Junqueiro and this beautiful building hosts an eclectic collection of sculptures, jewellery and ceramic figurines.
  • Porto Cathedral (known as the Sé Cathedral) is just a few hundred metres from the station. Nestled on the city’s highest point, this is the most important religious building in Porto and has also been designated a national monument. Construction began in the 12th Century but took so long that several architectural styles are apparent, including Romanesque, Baroque and Gothic, and don’t miss the 14th Century cloister, which is adorned with several stunning Biblical scenes.
  • Praça da Liberdade (Liberty Square) is a stone’s throw from Sao Bento Train Station and it’s the main square of Porto, which links the old and new town. Dominated by a 10m high bronze statue of King Peter IV, this is a wonderful spot for people watching.
  • Braga is only a 45-minute drive from Porto and the coastal road is stunning. There are plenty of sublime seafood restaurants to choose from when you arrive, several ancient churches and a bevy of beautiful beaches nearby.
