There’s plenty to see and do in Amadora and there are also several terrific road trips you’ll adore. Here are a few highlights to look forward to:
- The area around Museu da Polvora Negra is always worth a visit ̶ as well as the museum itself, which provides fascinating interests to local history, there are lots of lush green areas for picnics, a quality restaurant, bar and nightclub. Furthermore if you’re here in the summer, you might catch a live music gig or open-air cinema event.
- Palacio Nacional e Jardins de Queluz is one of the last remaining fine Rococo palaces in Europe. This eye-popping palace was the salubrious summer residence of Dom Pedro of Braganza, who later became King consort of Portugal, and it was designed by skilled architect Mateus Vicente de Oliveira under the supervision of his masterful mentor Jean-Baptiste Robillon. As well as the countless attractions of the plush interior, there’s also a beautiful boating canal in the grounds.
- Aguas Livres Aqueduct was built in the 18th Century to relieve Lisbon’s drinking water shortage and it’s an engineering marvel that runs for 20km from Caneças just north of Amadora right down into Portugal’s capital city. The most vertiginous arches reach 65km at the Alcantra Valley and feature gorgeous Gothic embellishments, while there’s a walkable section around the Monsanto Forest.
- Sintra is around 20km from Amadora via the A37 road and, traffic permitting, you can be there in around 20 minutes. There’s plenty to see here, including the elaborate Quinta da Regaleria palace, fairytale Pena Palace with its blend of Moorish and Renaissance influences, and the Old Centre, which is full of labyrinthine alleyways and attractive townhouses.
- Colares is 28km northwest of Amadora via the A37 and N247 and you can usually drive there in 30-40 minutes. The Convent of the Capuchos is an unusual tourist attraction here which captures the imagination of everyone who visits ̶ it’s a ruined 16th Century Franciscan monastery you can ramble around, which is eerily beautiful and full of buildings carved from solid rock, now overgrown with lush vegetation.
