Poznan is one of the most dynamic cities in Poland thanks to its balance of the old and the new. With a beautifully sad history, classical architecture, and a bustling business sector, Poznan is the ideal city to visit for a little bit of everything.

Poznan, interestingly, is often known as the ‘money-making’ city to other Polish people, as it draws in a huge number of business travellers each year – but there is so much more to the city than just work. Poznan has a wonderful leisure scene too, mainly found in three key areas of the city: the Stary Rynek, the Ostrów Tumski Island and Nowe Miasto. Don’t be put off by the ‘all work and no play’ attitude some other cities in Poland refer to Poznan as, because this couldn’t be further from the truth. There is so much to see, do and experience in Poznan you truly don’t want to miss this wonderful city in Western Poland.

Things to do in Poznan

As we’ve said, there is so much to see and do in Poznan, you won’t want to miss a thing. It can be a bit overwhelming at first to know where to start, but don’t worry – we know some of the best spots to see the most iconic parts of the city.

Visit the Imperial Castle

Zamek, also known as ‘Imperial Castle’ was built in the 1900s for the Imperial Kaiser Wilhelm back when Poznan was a German city. Now, the castle is a thriving cultural hub, with regular performances shown throughout the year. Below the Zamek itself, you’ll find a whole museum dedicated to the uprising in 1956 against Soviet rule. This museum is a great way to be reminded of the rebellious and chaotic past of Poznan, as well as learn about their resilience and determination as a city.

Head to the Old Town

Starting at the stunning Market Square, or ‘Stary Rynek’ to the locals, you’ll be able to stroll to the Old Town in Poznan. The Old Town was restored to its pre-World War 2 glory after the war and has been beautifully reconstructed. The gorgeous Renaissance buildings, including the Town Hall, which is now home to the museum of the city, are unlike any other in Europe. Other attractions in the area include the Wielkopolska Military Museum and palaces seemingly hidden behind every corner. You’ll truly be mind-blown at the architecture and history that you find in Poznan Old Town.

The Church of St Stanislaus

For those of you looking to explore the religious culture in Poznan, the Church of St Stanislaus is a highlight that simply cannot be missed. Although not Poznan’s main cathedral, it is one of the most sensational buildings in the area and features some of the most incredible European architecture. The interior of the church is full of masterpieces and artwork that cannot be seen anywhere else, including paintings by the famous Szymon Czechowicz. If you happen to be visiting the area on Saturdays, we recommend heading to the church as it comes alive with the notes of the 1870s organ playing – it is a fantastic experience for both atheists and theists alike.

Witness where it all began on Cathedral Island

Situated just down the Warta River you will find Cathedral Island. According to Polish stories and legends, this is where Poland first began – so it is a must-see for history-enthusiasts. Cathedral Island is the city's oldest neighbourhood, and at the heart is the cathedral that was built in around 968 AD. We recommend, however, starting your trip through Cathedral Island at the Porta Posnania Center, which will give you a brief rundown of Polish history. Once you’ve finished up there, you’ll want to soak up some more artwork at the Archdiocese Museum, and try to keep a look out for the tiny Gothic Church of the Virgin Mary on your travels – it is easy to miss, but a must-see.

Eating Out in Poznan

Poland is known for its unique, yet tasty cuisine – from Pierogi to Zurek, there is a little something for everyone to try. When you’re in the city, you will want to try out one of the local ‘milk bars,’ where the food is traditional and affordable and you get an authentic polish experience. But where else is good to eat in Poznan?

The people of Poznan love their potato dishes, and the Pyra Bar is the perfect place to showcase this love. The Pyra Bar is dedicated to all things potato and the menu is full of a variety of different dishes – from fried to diced, sweet to savoury, Pyra Bar has it all.

Na Winklu

Pierogi is a local favourite and can be found all over Poland. But, if you’re looking to try some of the perfect samples of Pierogi while you’re in Poznan, then Na Winklu is the best place to start. Their menu is packed full of delicious dumplings, from boiled to baked, traditional to modern, sweet to savoury – you’ll be able to find the most succulent pierogi for your tastebuds, no matter your preference.

Wiejskie Jadło

Lots of people visit Poznan as a day trip stop – so if you’re planning to do this then Wiejskie Jadło is the perfect place to eat. It’s conveniently situated in the Old Market Square and serves traditional Polish food. As well as this, the atmosphere is extremely friendly and the staff are always on hand to answer any questions you may have about the food or even the local area.

Transport in Poznan

Poznan is known for having quite a good public transportation network which consists of trams and buses – so it is relatively easy to get around once you’re in the city. Along with this, there are taxis available which are extremely reliable and relatively cheap. If, however, you were considering hiring a car, most of Poznan City Centre is pedestrianised, but if you do decide to hire a car in Poland, they are really affordable and a great way to explore the outskirts of cities that are otherwise unreachable by public transport.
