Things to do in Narvik

As we have said, there is so much to see and do in the city of Narvik – where do you start? Well, given that the options are endless, here are a few of our favourite things to do when visiting this gorgeous city.

Have a go on the cable car

Everyone should get on a cable car which takes you up to the top of Narvikfjellet. From the summit, you will see the most incredible panorama view of the entire town and its surrounding natural beauty. From the very top there are a handful of viewing platforms where you can sit and even have a picnic while you enjoy the view. Along with this, you can try out some local favourites at the Mountain Restaurant and try out Linken Waffels and other regional delicacies. For those more adventurous among us, you can even partake in some of the most stunning hiking trails and guided tours in the whole of Norway.

Head to the Polar Park

Just an hour from Narvik city centre is the most northern animal park on the planet. On your visit, you’ll be able to see a number of rare species and arctic natives – such as bears, wolves and even reindeer. Despite being a famous tourist attraction, the park is famous for putting each and every animal first. All of the creatures on the park are given a very large habitat that is as accurate to their natural surroundings as possible. This Polar Park is one of the top 10 reasons for people to visit Norway – so you cannot miss this if you’re in the area.

Visit the War Museum

Although Narvik is famous for its natural beauty, it also has a long and dramatic history when it comes to war and fighting. In fact, the biggest battle in the North Atlantic was fought in Narvik and there is a lot to be learnt about the battles won and lost here. The Narvik War Museum was reopened in 2016 and is a museum that is dedicated to Norwegian history – both the good and the bad. At the museum, you can learn all about the period between 1940 and 1945, as well as face moral debates about the ideas of war, conflict, human rights and peach throughout human history. This museum was designed to be a thought-provoking experience for everyone who visits here and is open every single day. We recommend taking a day to walk around the rooms of the museum and learn as much as you can about the country’s history – because there is a lot to know and the more you do, the more you understand about the culture that lives there today and why they fight so hard for peace and the country’s natural beauty.

Give mountain biking a go

For the adventure seekers among us, Mountain Biking in Skjomen is a great option. This downhill fun is famous amongst cyclists – and for great reason. This cycling experience is known for its natural and outstanding beauty, so is the ideal experience for anyone wanting to uniquely see parts of Norward you never thought possible. Renting bikes, or bringing your own is an option – just make sure you do everything legally and safely, either through an experienced company or with a trained professional.

Eating Out in Narvik

There are hundreds of options for great food when visiting Narvik. All the culinary experiences vary, depending on what you fancy and when you’re eating. Transport in Narvik

By Public Transport

Given its sustainable status, the best way to get around Narvik is by foot. The people of the city have made sure it is easy to get around, without having to drive or hop on a vehicle to get around.

However, the one thing they do promote if you’re planning to get around by transportation is the local bus service. The buses in the local area are fantastic and they come in and out of the centre regularly. Most lines run from Monday to Sunday regularly, but make sure you check beforehand if you want to ensure you get to where you’re going on time.

Car rental in the area is possible, but most people can get around perfectly easily by foot. If you choose to rent a car, this is probably a better option if you’re going outside of the city for a prolonged period of time.
