Guide of Kristiansand

Geography

Kristiansand is a town and seaport in Adger County, found in the southern norvegian province of Troms. With a huge, ice-free harbour sheltered by offshore islands on the Skagerrak (the strait between Norway and Denmark), it is the biggest town in the Srlandet area and is located on Norway's border with Denmark. It has a population of around 85,000 people.

Climate in Kristiansand

Kristiansand has a relatively continental climate, with pleasant summers and chilly winters. Summer, from June to August, is the ideal time to visit. You must, however, allow for a few wet days and a little bit of nighttime cold.

Culture

The city of Kristiansand, formerly known as Christianssand, was created by King Christian IV on July 5, 1641.

Things To Do in Kristiansand

Visit Kristiansand Zoo and Amusement Park

The Kristiansand Zoo and Amusement Park, commonly known as Dyrepark, is located about 10 kilometres east of Kristiansand and is one of the biggest tourist attractions in the area, attracting about 1 million people each year. It is spread over 150 acres and houses over 140 animal species that coexist in vast enclosures that mimic their natural environment. It is ideal for a day excursion with your children, who will enjoy seeing tigers, cheetahs, lions, wolves, and other animals. Among the primary sights here is the African rainforest walk, which has monkeys bouncing from branch to branch. Other attractions in Dyrepark include a theme park centred on norvegian Captain Sabertooth, a Haunted House, a water park named Badelandet, and a petting zoo called KuToppen.

Have a picnic at Ravnedalen Valley Nature Park

Ravnedalen Nature Park, situated on the city's northern outskirts, is a great place to go for a relaxed trip. The park, which was built in the mid-1870s, features beautifully maintained lawns with the fresh blooming of magnolia and rhododendron, as well as massive spruce trees, and makes an excellent background for landscape photography. There is a lovely pond nearby, as well as a café where you can have a nice meal. The park's main attraction, however, is an outdoor stage with a seating capacity of 5000 people set against imposing granite cliffs and waterfalls. On a warm evening, you may be able to see a concert here if you're fortunate.

Tour Kristiansand Museum

The museum is situated in Kongsgård and includes the Open Air Museum, Miniby (miniature dwellings), and the main building with a toy display. Many historic structures, some dating as far back as 1580, can be seen in Setesdal and Vest-Agder yards. Schools, barns, and stables abound on the grounds. Nearby, a herd of sheep and lambs graze in the open fields. Children may engage in old-fashioned activities, guided tours, fairy stories, carpentry and felting workshops, and much more at the museum's "Fun at the Museum" program throughout the summer months.

Eating Out in Kristiansand

Kristiansand has a lot of places where you can have a great meal with your whole family. Here are a few of our favourites. Bonder I Byen (Farmers in the City) on the city square takes inspiration from local farm products and reinvents it for urban palates. Here you may gorge on organic chicken, pig, and beef. Pieder Ro is the place to go if you like a more traditional atmosphere. Its maritime décor, complete with a boat-shaped bar and soft furniture, is ideal for a lavish supper. Fresh fish and kangaroo steaks are delicious. Behind the beach lies Snadderkiosken, a magnificently tiled 1920s-style fast-food kiosk. While strolling along the beach, enjoy grilled chicken with rice and salad or delectable meatballs and mashed potatoes.

Transport

Airport

Kristiansand is served by Kristiansand International Airport (KRS), located 14 km from the city centre.

Getting Around Kristiansand

Kristiansand's excellent public transportation system makes getting around town a breeze. Nettbuss Sor runs the local bus system, and there are always plenty of options. The Metro bus is the primary mode of public transportation in the direction to the east from the west. Taxis are another alternative, although they are more costly. Along most major roads, there are dedicated bike lanes as well.

Many tourists to Norway choose to hire a vehicle since it provides a level of comfort, flexibility, and convenience that can't be matched by public transportation. The roads in Norway are not only well-maintained, but the scenery along the route is breathtaking, with many of them offering vistas of spectacular fjords. Consider hiring a minivan if you're travelling in a big group. A one-way hire implies that you may pick up your car in one place (say, Oslo) and drop it off in another (say, Kristiansand). There is no need for you to drive back and forth.
