When Scupi was colonized by a variety of people after Antiquity, its name was changed several times. The city's Albanian residents still refer to it as "Shkup" and "Shkupi" today. Many languages accepted the city's new name, "Skoplje," when the Kingdom of Serbia acquired Vardar Macedonia in 1912. After World War II, when standard Macedonian became the country's official language, the city's name was spelt "Skopje" to suit the local pronunciation.
